On the next page was a map of the surrounding area showing the main roads to Konoha. I would be in this alone. It was a lot to take in.

I read it over a few more times, lingering on the details and the requirements in particular and committing them to memory. Itachi watched me intently the whole time. I noticed that my Bloodline limit said: None; which wasn’t true. And my elemental abilities were reduced to two instead of three. It meant I would have to hold back in any future confrontations.

Finally, I looked up at the Uchiha who was still watching me so closely. I had a question.

“What if the Hokage, or someone in the village asks me for proof of my birthplace or education?” I asked.

“Your documents have will be sent to the Hokage. They have already been forged  and copied and an agreement made with the Hidden Cloud Council. You should have no problems getting into the Academy or going back to the Hidden Cloud if it ever comes up.”

I nodded. Of course they would have all the bases covered.

I noticed that the requirements were mostly observation. Yeah, I could do that.

Acquiring the map would be a little more difficult though. It would serve to fully test my skills as a ninja.

“And I’ll be alone…” I muttered quietly, more to myself than anyone else.

“Yes. You will essentially be a spy.”

“When do I start?”

“You will have to leave for Konoha tomorrow morning.”

“Is this the last time I will see you?” I asked, my voice sounding to me like a whisper.

His eyebrows rose slightly and then slowly brightened into a smile. He placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder, “No.”

I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding.

As mercenaries, we were encouraged never to harbour feelings for anyone, even for fellow comrades. But I was eternally grateful to Itachi for how he helped me through the years. I owed him my life.

Finishing up our discussion, I got up to leave his room.

Surprisingly when I reached the door Itachi slowly leaned forward and placed a light kiss on my forehead. I froze as his arm wrapped around me. He had never done this before. Ever. I didn’t know whether to hug him back, or…?

I blinked up at him, realising too late I had a dumbstruck look on my face.

I felt a little light headed when he stepped back, the ghost of a smile playing about his lips.

“See you at dawn Yuri-chan,” he said quietly as the door between us slowly closed of its own accord.
