Mayrse had seen that look on Simon's face.

The same look she'd seen on Luke's face when he and Jocelyn got engaged. The look of pure love and adoration, where you're ready to give everything to your partner and expect nothing in return.

She knew she had that with Robert, or at least thought she had when they were in the circle. She had been so sure of it, so sure of them. But now it was like she and Robert were holding each other by a loose thread, or maybe they were like this long a long time ago, but she had failed to see it.

She ran her fingers through her thick braided hair, with few streaks of grey in between that spoke her age. She squinted her eyes in the dim light of the library and sighed.

Ever since Jace and Clary had taken over the institute she had a lot of time to herself except some casual scenarios where they needed her help to handle rouge downworlders, but did fine. Robert was inquisitor and that kept him busy but she on the other hand had a lot of time to think. Her mind always wandered to what she and Robert would have been like if they had chosen differently, it was pointless she knew it, but didn't stop it. She would think of Max many of the times and feel a dull ache in her ribs remembering his grey eyes. What was it that Jem... James Carstairs had said?

Time doesn't make loss forgettable, only bearable.

She let out a sigh again.

"Mayrse?" Luke's figure entered the library his eyes unfocused like an animal waiting to be let free.

"Luke? why are you still here? Not that I mind, but you must be tired." Mayrse said.

Luke was a bit surprised, the dark war had changed them all in some way but it was with Mayrse that he found the changes more noticeable. She had become more insightful in some way and more- he almost laughed at the word- bearable.

"Magnus and the others just returned. They have news about Malcom Fade. " Luke continued.

A pair of purple eyes flashed in front of Mayrse's eyes.

"Malcome Fade?"
