Avery Monroe is like every other 16 year old girl, she's always with friends and she has an adorable crush, but what happens when her world suddenly flips? She is forced to move almost 2,000 miles to a place she's never heard of. What trouble could...
My name is Avery. I'm sixteen and I've lived in Portland, Maine my whole life, until now. I guess I should explain everything now. So my parents were high school sweethearts, everyone is around here, they got married when they got out of college. Right away my mom found out she was pregnant with my oldest brother, Alec. Then about a year after he was born, I was conceived. When I was six and Alec was seven they announced that I'd be a big sister. We were all excited. Then she lost the baby. This happened several times for the next four years. Then when I was ten she made it full term and gave birth to my younger brother, Aaron. Now Alec is seventeen and Aaron is six. Our lives were good, until Aaron was diagnosed with ADHD. We always knew he had it but when the doctor confirmed it everything started happening so fast. All three of us kids were getting bullied at school and our parents were "mysteriously" fired from their jobs. Everyone treated us like it was contagious.
So my parents sold our house and used our savings to move 1,712 miles to Wichita, Kansas. At first us kids didn't understand why there of all places, but apparently another family, the Fletcher's, moved their when we were young. Candice, the mother, was my moms best friend in high school. They were practically forced to move after a similar thing happened to their daughter, Lily. Lily was five when she was diagnosed with brain cancer, everyone shunned them and churches denied them. So they moved. She passed away less than a year later. We would have been the same age.
That leads us to today June 4th, 2017. Final moving day. We split the driving into three days, about nine hours of driving a day. My dad and brother both drove moving trucks, my mom drove her car with Aaron, and I drove our RV. We had to sell our furniture and have our other cars shipped. You wouldn't think nine hours of driving hard, but for Aaron it is. When we finally make it to Wichita we all follow my mom, she has the gps, to our new home. As we're driving through the neighborhood I notice everyone staring. Finally we get to the house and immediately Aaron jumps out of the car and lays in the grass. I park the RV in front of the house and climb out. Looking around I notice that our neighbors are all adults. I walk around the front and sit next to Aaron "do you like our new home?"
He stands up and grabs my hand "lets go pick rooms!" As he drags me inside I look over my shoulder just in time to see a group of boys going into the house across the street. I shrug it off and follow Aaron upstairs. He runs to the master bedroom. "My room!?"
I pick him up on my hip. "I don't think so." I walk across the hall and open the door "this is your room buddy." He jumps out of my arms and runs around.
"Are you going to sleep in here with me?"
I shake my head "Alec and I sleep downstairs. So you want me to show you?" He nods his head and grabs my hand so I lead him down to the basement. I show him Alec's room first then I show him mine.
"You're too far away! What if I need you?" He gets an angered look on his face.
I kneel down to his level and grab his shoulders "I won't be down here all the time and if I am down here, you're welcome to visit me." He pulls away and runs upstairs, if you couldn't tell my old room was right across the hall from his. I follow him upstairs and find him sitting in the living room on his gameboy. I give a small smile then go outside. "Hey mom when is the furniture getting here?"
She looks up from her phone. "Any minute now. Go help your brother carry in boxes."
So for the next three hours my dad, Alec, and I carry stuff in, putting them in the rooms written on the boxes. My mom watched Aaron and told the furniture company where everything went and they were nice enough to build everything. At seven p.m. we final finish bringing everything in so we decide to eat and call it a night. Since we haven't bought any food we order pizza, which wasn't that great. At eight my mom takes Aaron upstairs to put him to bed and Alec and I go down to our rooms. I start unpacking my clothes. After a little while Alec comes in and sits on my bed "this is bs Avery."
I turn to him and raise my eyebrow "explain?"
"Mom's acting it's normal to be shunned out of your own city." He runs a hand through his hair.
I sigh and go back to hanging up clothes "I think the change is good for us."
"Good for us? Our whole lives were spent there!"
"That's what I'm talking about Alec. Everyone back to our great great great grandparents spent their whole lives there. They never left and now they're all doing the same thing as everyone else. Date your parents best friends daughter, graduate highschool, graduate college, get married, have kids right away, work at the same job as everyone else until you retire, pass away, repeat. Nothing changes."
He rolls his eyes at me "it's the same everywhere Ave"
"No it's not Alec, you'll see." I finish hanging up clothes and move to clothes that get folded.
He's quiet for a minute "did you see the guys across the street? I bet they're our only neighbors under thirty."
I laugh so hard my side starts to hurt "how do you know they live there?"
He pulls out his phone "I talked to them. They're my age. It's a mom and her kids, Tristan who's eighteen, Tanner who's almost seventeen, and Taylor she's fourteen."
I look back at him "I saw a group of guys and girls who didn't look like siblings."
He rolls his eyes at me "one of them was Tanner, the really tall one is Dylan, the other boy is Quentin, then the two girls are Tanner's and Quentin's girlfriends. I invited them over here tomorrow, we're going to swim."
"Since you apparently already have plans tomorrow, shouldn't you be unpacking now?"
He thinks about it for a second "this is why you're the smart child." He gets up, pats my head, and leaves.
I turn on music and continue unpacking. After what seemed like half and hour, I check my phone. "Wow" I say to myself. It's midnight. I turn off my music and change into some pajamas. I put my phone on charge, shut off my lights, and climb into bed.
