Harrys stomach was filled with unease as he stepped into the bathroom. Memories of his last encounter with a basilisk resurfaced along with a twinge of fear that he quickly shoved back down. There was a big difference between a baby basilisk and that monstrous beast he had faced in his second year.He took a step forward his old rather battered pair of shoes squeaking loudly against the floor, the high-pitched noise cutting through the frigid silence. Harry wasn't quite sure if he was relieved or further stressed by the sudden noise. For a moment, Harry considered opening his eyes but two things stopped him; The thought of seeing George petrified and laying helplessly on the floor or even possibly dead and the fact that if he even glanced at the newborn creatures eyes he would die.
Harry concentrated solely on a vision of a snake ignoring the eerie feeling of being watched and possibly stalked as best he could. It usually didn't take much pressuring to slip into parseltongue as he had only the garden snakes for conversation over the past summers, but the fear that was slowly eating away at his reserves made things slightly more difficult.
"It's a damn baby snake...calm down." Harry scolded himself as he tried to reign in his emotions, something he was never very good at and only became worse at after Cedric's death. He mentally scolded himself for letting himself think about that. No matter what he thought about his mind always seemed to find a way to drag him right back into that emotional mess of memories.
"Calm down? No, you should very much fear me." The voice was not Fred's, nor myrtles, nor even one that he recognized, and the tone it used was serious yet Harry was sure there was humorous implications behind it. Perhaps that was wishful thinking on his part.
"Who are you?" Said Harry, hoping dearly this wasn't another one of Voldemort's schemes.
"The one you referred to as dam baby snake I believe...unless you were referring to the two look-alikes. Though they're not very snakelike, to loud." Harry felt like slamming the palm of his hand to his head but settled for a long and frustrated sigh, most of the frustration targeted at his own stupidity.
"Sorry..." That was all Harry could think to say to the dangerous creature as he didn't think that angering such a beast albeit just a baby would be a wise idea.
"Harry, are you alright?" Hermione called through the door. She sounded rather winded and Harry figured that Fred was only growing all the more restless and insistent as every second ticked by. He could barely imagine the pain and fear running through Fred's mind knowing that his brother was just on the other side of a door with a very dangerous creature.
"I-I'm fine...just er talking?" Harry responded, still feeling rather unnerved and helpless as he stood around with his eyes closed without the slightest inclination as to where anything was.
"the lookalike isn't dead...an annoying girl got in the way. She had no heartbeat." The young basilisk supplied rather bitterly.
"Moaning Myrtle?" Harry asked rather happily as he was relieved that George was indeed still alive.
"Is that her name? It's fitting." The snake agreed. Harry couldn't help the small smile that crept across his face, at least the creature wasn't completely detached.
Harry flinched when he felt something lay against the top of his shoe, perhaps slither is a better word. He stood frozen to the spot knowing all too well that basilisk were very poisonous and at the moment Fawkes was nowhere in sight.
"I see you are new to being a snake speaker perhaps? Or to fostering a basilisk or both even... a hint is in order?" The young creature said helpfully.
The fact that the creature had only just hatched moments ago and already appeared to have so much knowledge inherently was unsettling. He could definitely see why the ministry classified basilisk as extremely dangerous creatures and he was even more grateful that he had managed to survive an encounter with a beast and kill it.
"A hint?" Said Harry, wondering if the basilisk thought he was going to keep it. Would he keep it?
"hmmm let's see, let's see...you have one of those stick things...yes?" The basilisk hissed still slithering across his feet and coiling around his ankles.
"A wand." Harry clarified.
"Yes, a wand...and a spell, with five closes and- "The basilisk didn't get very far into its overcomplicated hint as Harry cut it off.
"just tell me the spell please, I've had enough riddles." Harry asked somewhat bitterly as images of sphinxes and tall hedge mazes floated into his mind for the briefest of seconds before he shut them out again.
"Alright, alright, the spells is bivius celaverimus" Said the young basilisk.
"ok." Harry said not having the slightest clue what the spell did or where the basilisk was as it was no longer slithering across his shoes.
"kneel down and point the wand here." The basilisk commanded. Harry did indeed kneel slowly just to be extra careful that he didn't accidently crush the young snake nor bump into Myrtle or George. He then pointed his wand straight in front of him.
"to the left...no, no, no, the other right...up, down, south, towards the blue a bit more." The basilisk supplied rather unhelpfully. It grated terribly against Harrys already frayed nerves.
"bivius celaverimus!" Harry finally hissed not exactly caring if he managed to hit the snake.
"Lucky shot." The basilisk hissed happily. Harry continued to kneel there rather confused.
"well open your eyes you spectacle wearing dunce." The Basilisk commanded impatiently.
Hesitantly Harry did just that. First, he slowly peeled open his right eye then his left. In front of him not more than a foot away laid George and Myrtle. George laid in a hunched over position his hands placed securely on his knees, his eyes wide, a wide grin across his face. Myrtle however was standing straight as a board her arms crossed and a scowl etched upon her translucent face.
Harrys green eyes slowly dropped lower to the floor where a bundle of scales writhed impatiently. Green scales glittered in the light, sharp poisonous teeth peeked out from between its slightly ajar jaws a long glittering tongue poking out between the tall white pillars every few moments or so. Its body was no larger than his fist if it coiled up. Thankfully a thin piece of fabric was wrapped securely around its eyes.
"Your eyes are very green." The snake commented absently as it slithered onto the hand he hadn't even realized he had lowered.
"How can you...see?" Harry asked perplexed.
"You may not see my eyes, but my eyes see you." The creature hissed playfully.
