A month passed and I was in a push and pull walk to offer her a ride again. Every time I had gathered enough guts to offer her one again, it just quickly dissipates when I remember where we last got to.

It’s not that I’m afraid to go back to that place. It’s the idea that she might not be who I expect her to be. I don’t want to think that the sweet, innocent, independent yet eternally snob girl that I see her to be is just the opposite. And that place hosts a lot of the things that I know that she’s not, or, she’s not as how I want her to think of.

“Dean, are you okay?” Camille asked me.

She’s one of my friends who’s popular, pretty and not over herself. And unlike Kendra, she’s not a toxic chemical that says handle with care.

“Yeah man, you’ve been zoning out again.” Jason chimed in.

“Yeah, I just have a lot to think about.” I replied.

I’ve been thinking about that place and how in the world is Sam fitted in that place. There is also the issue that she manages to return back without a scathe. It was crazy.

“Gary and Kendra don’t seem to be interested on getting back.” Heather said in the background.

“And Sam’s out of your hair too.” Travis added.

“What do you mean by that?” I looked over to Travis to shoot him down with my question. That statement didn’t sit well with me. He needs to clarify that because I’m about to make a conclusion that he meant that as an insult to Sam.

“She’s nothing but trouble.” Amanda answered for him. The way she said was pushing my blood to boil.

“Can you elaborate more on that?” I asked Amanda with my eyes reacting with my voice by narrowing it.

“Well, she’s everybody’s doormat.” Amanda answered waving my question to make it sound like it should have been obvious to me in the beginning.

“Doormat?” I asked her.

“Doormat, you know, everyone wipes their dirt off of her. She cleans up everybody else’s ‘troubles’.” Heather replied an obvious answer to my question.

She misinterpreted my question. I know what doormat means. I meant that to ask why they would actually make that comment about her. It was out of character for them to make a comment like that.

“And how does that make her trouble?” I asked to everyone. Amanda stating that she was trouble doesn’t fit.

“Well, if you claim her, you’ll have to deal with a lot of her, clients.” Travis answered.

I didn’t like how that sounds. They’re saying to me that Sam is leper to be avoided. There is also the underlying statement that they don’t want to be associated with her. And that’s just because she was bullied.

“And besides, she’ll cramp our style.” Travis continued.

“What did you just said?” I asked him, my eyes deep set into him, and boring holes to his soul.

That was something else entirely. Style is not what I’ve considered to choose who I want to be with. People near me get near because I like who they are, no matter how many flaws they have.

“Look man, she’s trouble and she’s a nerd.” Travis answered. He’s tone is already raised  to the level that she’s a person to stay away with.

“Yeah, and we shouldn’t associate ourselves with losers like her.” Amanda added.

“We’re not a pity club Dean. And as much as I like Sam, she just doesn’t fit right into us.” Camille agreed.
