Milly:
I cant even fathom what just happened! I just stare blankely into space for a moment then start walking robotically back up the path AWAY from the port. ‘milly where are you going?’ Gon silently asks me. ‘Home.’ I reply shortly.
“Milly slow down, talk to me!” Kyra pleads as she runs behind me. “I know your angry with me, with Layla, with yourself, but please look at me, talk to me, SOMETHING!” rage burns inside me, I turn and slap Kyra right across the face. Everyone takes a collective breathe.
“How could you.” I whisper, a lump forms in my throat. Looking in her eyes I know now exactly what Layla was talking about. “How could you not tell me, ME!” I cry. The others just watch us in confusion.
“You can see it can’t you?” she asks quietly.
“Yes I can see it, but I don’t believe it!” I snap back.
“What are you two talking about?” Leorio interrupts.
“Look at her eyes!” I yell to the rest. “Just look at her eyes, Kurapika should know what to look for.” His eyes grow wide and he runs to Kyra’s side. She instinctively shuts her eyes, as if to protect him from the hurt.
“Kyra, open your eyes.” He says softly but firmly. A tear escapes as she slowly lifts her gaze to meet his. His eyes burn scarlet and he stumbles backwards. “No, no, how could I not have seen…” the rest look as well but all they see is that her eyes are scarlet.
“I don’t understand Kurapika?” Leorio says. “What is wrong?
“Her eyes, they have the fever.” He says quietly.
“What do you mean her eyes have a fever?” Pokkle asks in confusion.
“It is a disease that can only affect a Kurta tribesman. It’s called ‘the fever of these eyes’ because it’s our eyes that kill us. According to legend, the Kurta tribe has these eyes as a sign that we were sent to this world as servants of the devil. We were known to many as the scarlet eyed demons. People feared what they did not understand. But scientifically the explanation of our eyes is quite simple. Every Kurta tribesman has this unique genetic trait; it is caused by an abnormal enzyme in our blood. When this enzyme in combined with high levels of adrenaline, such as when we experience intense emotion, it causes many different reactions but the most visible is the iris of our eyes turning scarlet. The disease, fever of the eyes, is when these enzymes become over abundant. They begin to kill you from the inside out!” he has to stop a moment and calm himself.
‘This makes sense.’ I hear Gon think to himself. ‘It explains why she hasn’t been herself and why her eyes turned scarlet over a stupid bowl.’
“But how can you tell just by looking at her eyes?” Ponzu wonders.
“Look at her pupils, they are scarlet as well, normally it is only the iris’ that are red. Once it reaches this point there is no hope of a cure!” he instinctively pulls out his Bokken Swords and grips them tightly.
“Is it contagious?!” Leorio cries as he grabs Kurapika’s arm and starts to pull him away.
“Usually it is but I have been vaccinated.” He tells us. “A young Kurta child under the age of 10 has next to no risk of developing the disease. The vaccine is very painful and can make you very sick if you’re not strong enough, this is the main reason they wait until they absolutely have to administer it. And at this very moment it has occurred to me, her family went missing when she was 6-years-old, that means she never got the vaccine.” Tears begin to fall but he seems strangely cold and distant. More like he was when I first met him, like he is trying to leave his emotion out, to not care! Though, at the moment I sort of feel the same; like I don’t want to feel anymore because it hurts!
