Having composed over a hundred songs, EXO's Lay wishes to be like Beethoven

EXO’s Lay has always dreamt of being an acclaimed world musician. It turns out that the idol has made good progress in reaching his dreams as he has already composed about 100 songs since the age of 13 years old and still continues to compose songs to add to his collection of musical works.

The idol was known as a child actor in his native China and frequently appeared in various television programs. Being raised in the entertainment world led Lay to venture for an audition at SM Entertainment Global in his hometown, Changsha, China, and made him realize his dream to become a musician.

“I started composing when I was thirteen and have composed over one hundred songs. But I have no plan on releasing them because I haven’t officially learned how to compose and I think they aren’t good enough,” Lay explained in an interview, when he was still an SM trainee.

Lay also admitted that he often composed and performed his music along with the other EXO members, especially Chanyeol and Chen. Together the three idols often arranged melodies for their songs and improvised with it.

Although Lay is still not bold enough to publish his songs, the idol’s ability to compose songs have been commended by famous songwriter, Maxx Song.

“He has so many brilliant ideas. He is very rich in emotion, which lends him the ability to excel in composition of melodies,” Maxx said in his interview with lifestyle magazine, The Celebrity.

Lay’s passion and ability in creating songs is certainly not wasted by the idol label and agency, SM Entertainment, as the label has already used Lay’s dance track as a music background for the pre-debut team S.M Rookies, Irene and Seulgi.

“At first, I was a little worried that there would be difficulty incorporating Lay’s works into Korean culture because of the fact that he is Chinese. But when I listened to the works he composed, I didn’t feel any cultural difference at all,” Maxx Song continued.

In the future, Lay’s biggest dream is to continue to create and compose more songs. He wishes he can create songs like the maestro of classic music, Beethoven, and bring joy to music enthusiasts.

“I wish to create the same kind of magical music like those of Beethoven’s – those that move the hearts and minds of its listeners. Creating a song which everyone loves is not something that can be done in a single lifetime,” Lay added.
