Chapter 14: The Alpha’s got a thing for walls.

-Evangeline’s POV-

“Let me see Cade.”

I watched cautiously as Everett’s expression changed from relaxed to flat. He sighed quietly.

“Alright.”

Now, guys – I’m sure you’ve all figured out by now that I’m not exactly the smartest person in the world - Hence the reason why I continued in a rush.

“I know that you’ve told me about the entire thing with those rogues before – and I respect your hatred for them. But I swear on my life – Cade is different. He’s a good guy – a great one even, and I…” My breath hitched when I thought of the day I met my brother. How my pathetic, worn-out state was 4 years ago. “I owe him a lot. He… He was there when I needed him most. You don’t understand how guilty and rotten it feels to have him locked up in some dungeon while I stay here with you; even after all he has done for me.”

It was then when I realized that Everett was staring at me silently from the corner of his eyes. My lips snapped shut when I noticed that I was so close to telling him about me – about my past. My heart thundered furiously as I tried to control my breathing. Thus another reason why I really needed Cade at the moment – Everything was spiraling out of my control. Another few hours with Everett’s obliviously sly material and I would spill everything out to him. I wasn’t even sure if he –nor I – was ready for it.

Everett must’ve noticed that I wasn’t going to let anything slip for he turned his attention back to the road in disappointment.

“You really didn’t hear me, did you?” He sighed, “I said yes.”

I turned to him, my mouth dropping out, “What?”

“I. Said. Yes.” He phrased each word slowly as though I were 3.

“B-But… Why?” I sputtered. I had to be dreaming. Everett tossed me another sideways glance and sighed, though I could see the slight amusement in his green depts.

“You’ve been bugging me about seeing the rogue for days, and now when I finally submit you’re still asking questions?”

I narrowed my eyes, “Hey – that’s the thing. You’ve been avoiding the topic and now you oh-so-graciously accept? Talk about suspicious. This isn’t a trick or anything, is it?”

“Does it really look like I’d joke about something like this?” Everett asked seriously. I almost withered at the calm but deadly look in his eyes.

“Touché,” I mumbled, running a hair through my ponytail. Everett took one look at me and sighed.

“Evangeline,” I looked up to meet his piercing gaze, “Listen to me.”

“Yes, because I’m totally using invisible earphones,” I replied sarcastically. Everett glowered at me, a slight smile playing across his lips before he turned serious once again.

“I know that that rogue-” He caught the glare in my eyes, “Cade Faille,” He smartly corrected himself, “Is your friend, or ‘brother’, as you like to always say. I understand and respect that, though don’t get me wrong. Brother or not, Faille is still a rogue – always has been and always will be. He may be different, you said and I quote, but that doesn’t change matters. Rogues are not to be trusted. Understand?”
