August rolled into September, and school was just as boring as ever. My birthday was coming up soon, but I wasn't having a party since I didn't have enough people to invite. Luke talked to me more now, and I found that he was growing on me everyday. Lexi would always start giggling suspiciously when she saw us talking, and I would always pretend to ignore her.
"Anne! Guess what?!" Luke said one day while we were at recess.
"What?" I looked over toward where Lexi was to make sure she didn't see us talking.
"I got a pet turtle! His name is Rickybob," he said.
I laughed. What a strange name. "That's awesome, Luke," I said smiling.
He looked past my shoulder when he spoke to me. "Maybe you and Lexi could come over to see him sometime?" he said.
I shrugged. "Yeah, maybe, where do you live?"
Luke's eyebrows knitted together in confusion. "Well don't you know? I live in Lexi's neighborhood, do you think that my mom drove me all the way to her house so I could see your tree house?" he said.
I squinted my eyes. "I guess I never really thought about it," I said. I looked over at Lexi where she was waiting for me in the grassy area in the middle of the track. She gave me a thumbs up, and I rolled my eyes, exaggerated enough for her to see. Then I looked back at Luke.
"Excuse me," I said, and I walked past him to Lexi.
"You didn't tell me Luke lived in your neighborhood," I said, crossing my arms. Lexi smiled.
"I was waiting for you to finally realize!"
