"Lordy it is freezing!" I shouted to Lexi from my window.

"I know right! It never gets this cold!" she shouted back.

"Hey! Question!"

"What?!"

"Why are we shouting across the yard instead of using our walkie- talkies!?"

Lexi shrugged. "It's more fun! And it's cold so if we yell we can see our breath!" she shouted back.

Cold was an understatement. It was literally below zero. I didn't know it was even possible to get this cold in the south. I didn't have any coats that could keep me warm in this weather, so I had to stay inside. My mom refused to bring me out to get a coat, she said it was too cold to go outside, even if I had a coat that was appropriate. So, I did my best to annoy her while we were trapped in the house. Mostly all I had to do was wake Alice up, and that was really easy.

"Mom? Hey, Mom!"

"What Anne!?" my mom called back.

"What's for dinner?" I asked innocently.

"I don't know Anne! It's only 10!"

"Sorry Mom."

Mom sighed. "It's fine."

"Mom?"

I swear my mom's eyes almost rolled back into her head.

"What Anne?" she said, and I could tell she was about to lose it.

"Do we have any lemons?"

"Why do you want a lemon?" she asked.

"I don't, I was just wondering if we had any."

"Anne, please go to your room."

"Why?"

"Because I need some quiet."

"It is quiet," I said.

"Not with you here. Please, go to your room."

"Fine!" I said. On my way to my room, I slammed Alice's door and set her off crying.

"Annalise Claire Gallot!" my mom shouted, livid with my behavior.

"Yes?"

"Stop being such a pain!" she hissed.

"Sorry Mom, I just have so much energy stored up inside of me, and I can't go outside to work it all off because you won't bring me to the store," I replied.

"Stop being fresh," she demanded.

I held my hands up innocently and went into my room, where I flopped on my bed. January was such a stupid month. It was so cold! And then Lexi got sad the very first week. Then only another week later I had to spend money on a birthday present for her. Overall, not that great of a month.

I heard my walkie- talkie crackle to life, and I rushed over to it, eager to talk to someone. Luke and Will had both gone to Target and bought their own walkie- talkies, and they tuned it to the same channel so we could all talk to each other.

"Hello?" Luke's voice said, filling the room.

"Hi!"

"Anne?"

"That's me," I replied sarcastically.

"Oh. I'm so bored, my mom won't let me out of the house."

"Me neither!" I cried.

"Anne!" a new voice called.

"Yes?"

"Meet me at the clubhouse," Lexi said.
