December was nearing its end, and 2012 was too. The twinkling lights that wrapped trees and hung from rooftops soon turned into fireworks, celebrating the new year. Lexi and I were grocery shopping with Ms. Blackwell, or now, since she was officially divorced, Ms. Lotter.

"What's the big deal about a new year anyways? It isn't like anything really changes," Lexi said.

I shrugged, and pointed to a fancy looking bottle of sparkling apple juice. "Oh Ms. Black- I mean Ms. Lotter, can we please get that?" I asked.

"Of course we can sweetie," she said.

I knew that Ms. Lotter really liked me, so I used that to my advantage, as much as I didn't want to admit it. She pulled the bottle down from the shelf, and we continued to shop for food and favors for tonight's New Years Eve party. Lexi told me that there were going to be a ton of fireworks, and that we could play with sparklers. I was very excited for the party, and then afterwards, I was sleeping over at her house, since it was a little too cold to sleep in our hideout.

"Hey mom?" Lexi asked.

"Yes?"

"Can we please get a hamster for our clubhouse?" she said.

I watched as Ms. Lotter thought about it, her face scrunched up as if it truly hurt her head to think.

"No," she finally replied. Lexi gave me the look, and I knew it was my turn to step in.

"Oh please Ms. Lotter! There is a pet store right down the street, and we will take good care of it. We will feed it and everything!" I said.

Ms. Lotter looked at me, her expression softening.

"Well... okay, if you really want one," she said.

Lexi secretly high-fived me.

We walked down the street to the pet store, the cold wind seeping through our coats. When we entered, the tiny bells on the door tinkled, and we were greeted with a blast of warm air. Lexi and I immediately ran towards the hamster aisle, and we started looking at the ones we were interested in.

"Aw! Look at this one!" Lexi said. It was a small, white fluff ball that waddled everywhere. I tilted my head.

"Oh he's cute!" I said.

"Ooh! What about her?" Lexi asked, pointing to another hamster. This hamster was very strange looking, for it had little brown dots all over its sandy fur.

"I like her!" I said tapping on the glass.

The store assistant came and unlocked the cage so we could hold it.

" I likey," said Lexi.

I stroked the tiny hamster's fur. "I lovey," I replied. Lexi smiled and we got a special box to put the hamster in on the way home. We also picked out a cage, a rolly ball, litter, and some food for our new pet. Then we checked out, and hopped in the car.

"I think we should name her Chipmunk," said Lexi. Both Ms. Lotter and I looked at her weird.

"I am not naming a hamster Chipmunk," I said.

"Fine. You come up with a name," she said.

I looked at the hamster, wondering what on earth we were going to call it.

"How about Sprinkles?" I said.

"Why Sprinkles?"

"I don't know, it's cute!" I said.

Lexi pondered on that name for a whil before I saw her face melt into satisfaction.

"Sprinkles it is," she said.

When we got home, we immediately brought all of our supplies out to the clubhouse. I filled the cage with litter and food while Lexi cleared off one of the shelves in our bookcase.

"Here we are, Sprinkles," said Lexi excitedly.

I smiled at our new club addition, our mascot if you will.

"Welcome to the BFFC," I added, and with that, the hamster was officially in our club.

Later that night, I walked with my parents over to Lexi's house for the New Year's Eve party. It was so much fun! We played with sparklers, watched fireworks, saw the ball drop, and drank our sparkling apple juice. Before we went to sleep that night, Lexi leaned over and whispered to me like it was a very important secret.

"Welcome to a new year," she said.
