There were only a few more weeks of school left, and Lexi and I were very excited. We would be going on vacation together! Our parents decided that it was okay if I went with Lexi and Ms. Lotter to Ocean City, New Jersey. According to Lexi, there were a lot of fun things to do there, and I was happy I could go.
"And there is this boardwalk, and all the lights shine at night and...woah. New kid alert," Lexi said.
I looked over to where she was pointing at, and smiled.
There was a new boy, and he was very cute, if I did say so myself.
"How do you know he is new?" I asked.
Lexi looked at me like I was stupid. "Because, I would have noticed him sometime this year if he wasn't!" she said.
I laughed.
"Let's go say hi!"
"No! No way!" I said. Unlike Lexi, I was not a people person.
"C'mon Anne, you are great at making friends!" she said, tugging on my arm.
"Noo, you are good at making friends," I said stubbornly.
"Fine. If you won't go over to meet him, he is gonna have to come over here to meet us," she said.
Lexi cupped her hands around her mouth.
"Hey! New-"
"Stop, stop! Fine! We'll go meet him," I said cutting her off.
She smirked, grabbed my arm, and started skipping towards him.
"Hi! I'm Lexandra! I hate that name though, so you can call me Lexi. This is Anne. She's my best friend, but she is really shy. She still hasn't told me her full name, because she is too embarrassed by it, so you have no choice but to call her Anne," she said.
I slapped my forehead with my palm. Lexi continued.
"What's your name? If you want to, we can be friends, even though school is almost over."
The boy looked at her with an amused expression.
"Alright, that sounds cool. My name is William, but I hate that name, so you can call me Will," he said.
Lexi's face practically lit up.
"I like the way you think, Will," she said.
He turned to me. "So what is your full name?" he asked.
I was surprised by the question, and I wasn't really sure how to answer it, besides telling him. I mean, Lexi was easy to not tell, because I knew her, but no one random had ever really asked me.
"Annalise," I said quietly.
"Seriously? You will tell Will here, who you have known for 30 seconds, but not me?" Lexi said.
I rolled my eyes, and pinched her elbow, our signal for "I'll explain later". She shrugged, and I turned back to Will.
"So, where are you from?" I asked.
"New Jersey," he said.
"NO. WAY," Lexi said.
Will looked confused, so Lexi went on.
"I am going there this summer with Annalise!" she said sticking her tongue out at me.
The conversation went on from there, and I could tell that Will was going to become our friend. While Lexi spoke to him, Lord knows she never stopped, I looked him over. He had blue eyes, and blonde hair, kind of like me, though his hair was a bit darker. I could guess that he played soccer, because of his shinguard tan. I think Lexi would like that.
When recess was called in, Will had to go with his class. But Lexi made him promise that everyday at recess, we would all play. He agreed, probably happy to have a friend, just like I was.
"See? Aren't you glad we talked to him?" Lexi asked.
"I think you are glad you talked to him."
"Meaning?"
"I think you like him!" I teased.
Lexi's eyes widened. She hadn't hit her boy stage yet.
"EW NO!" she yelled, loud enough for everybody to turn around and look at us.
"Is there a problem, girls?" Mrs. Thorne asked.
Luke stepped out from behind us.
"No, no problem," he said, "Lexi just likes the new kid."
I saw Lexi's face turn to a shade of red I never thought was possible.
"You got suspended?!" Ms. Lotter yelled at Lexi.
"In her defense, I would have done the same thing," I said.
"Thanks, Anne," Lexi said under her breath.
"What did you do?!" her mom yelled.
After Luke had told everybody that Lexi liked Will, she had turned around and punched him. Everybody saw it, and she was sent to the principal's office. Luke had come with, telling the principal that he did deserve it, but even still, Lexi got suspended for a day. In third grade.
I think she may have broken a record.
