JAY

"Josephine Kaven Alden!" I yell angrily, my voice echoing through the house. She's ignoring me, I know it. I can practically hear her shouting at Ky and Deck to die, her usual dramatic self during their gaming sessions.

"KYLIE JAYCE GUREY!" I shout louder, the sound making my throat sting.

"DELILAH HARPER GUREY!" I scream even louder, and now my voice is getting raspy. But it's not my fault I sound like a maniac. I've been trying to get their attention for what feels like an eternity. I don't feel like moving; my legs are exhausted from running around all day. But seriously, where are they? It's like I'm yelling into the void. If none of them show up in 0.5 seconds, I swear I'm going to punch Ky, kick Deck, and take away Joe's game for an entire week. They're acting like toddlers.

Finally, Ky appears in the doorway, strolling in with Deck and Joe trailing behind, bickering as usual.

"Yeah, babe?" Ky asks, wrapping her arm around my waist, her lips brushing my neck in a way that makes me shiver. I lightly shove her because she knows I hate that in front of Joe.

"Oh, come on! She's not even paying attention," Ky whispers in my ear, her voice teasingly suggestive. I grin despite myself but still push her away, half-heartedly.

Behind us, Joe and Deck are locked in a heated debate. "You totally cheated!" Joe accuses, glaring at Deck.

"I did not! You just can't handle losing," Deck fires back, her voice dripping with childish defiance. Watching them argue is ridiculous, and yet it's so typical. They've been at it for hours, first over the video game and now... who knows what.

"Laser tag, then!" Deck challenges, pulling an apple from the fruit bowl, not realizing it's a fake one.

I don't bother warning her. She'll figure it out soon enough.

She takes a bite and immediately spits it out. "What the hell is this?!" she growls, wiping her mouth furiously.

"Fake fruit," I say, barely containing a laugh. "Why are you two still arguing?"

Joe ignores me, continuing to rant about Deck's alleged cheating, and Deck rummages through the fridge like she's searching for a hidden treasure.

"Fine! Let's settle this with laser tag!" Deck declares dramatically, tossing the bitten-off plastic apple at Joe. Her aim is terrible, and it almost hits me, but Ky catches it without even looking up, her reflexes sharp as ever. I shoot Joe a glare, silently telling her to behave.

"Fine!" Joe yells back, her eyes gleaming with determination. Deck spins around from the fridge to look at us, her face set with stubborn resolve.

Ky, meanwhile, is still focused on me, nibbling at my earlobe, completely ignoring the chaos around her. I nudge her, trying to make her aware of the fact that we have an audience, but she doesn't seem to care.

"Get a room!" Joe yells, her face scrunched up in disgust.

"Ky, are we playing or not?" Deck whines, bouncing on her toes like a child who can't sit still.

Ky finally looks up, clearly annoyed. "Not exactly," she says. "We have to finish packing. We're leaving in two days, remember?"

Her tone is serious, and I can tell she's trying to remind us all of the reality hanging over our heads—our move to California. The house is a mess, half-packed boxes scattered everywhere. I've lived here my entire life, and every corner seems to hold a memory. I've been working my ass off to get everything in order, but Ky and Deck have been less than helpful. Deck, in particular, has a talent for creating more mess than progress.

Ky tugs at my blouse, pouting. "Come on, you owe me a rematch from when you cheated."

I laugh. "I didn't cheat."

"Yes, you did. You flirted with me to distract me!"

I roll my eyes. "That's not cheating, that's strategy."

Ky grins, that boyish smirk I love so much spreading across her face. "I want my rematch."

I sigh, pretending to be exasperated, but deep down, I enjoy her playful persistence. "Fine. But Deck—invite Nyla. I'll call Mari."

Deck's face lights up at the mention of Nyla. I shake my head. Ky's 23, Deck's 19, but they act like five-year-olds half the time.

"You picked a real winner, Jay," I mutter to myself.

Later, we're all at the Kid Zone, waiting for our turn to play laser tag. Joe's already on the ice, sliding back and forth with excitement. Deck is, unsurprisingly, jumping up and down like a caffeinated rabbit, holding Nyla's hand as she bounces beside her.

"I'm so gonna kick that kid's ass," Deck mutters, glaring at Joe, who sticks out her tongue in return. Nyla giggles, pushing Deck playfully.

"You're the loser!" Joe retorts, and before I know it, Nyla, Mari, and I are all slapping Deck's arm in mock disapproval.

"Deck, shut up and suit up," Ky orders, handing out the laser tag bands. Her voice is firm, and I can't help but admire her when she takes control like that. She catches me staring and winks, her eyes twinkling with mischief. God, she knows exactly what that does to me.

"Ready to get your ass kicked, Alden?" Ky whispers, her breath hot against my ear. My knees go weak, and I almost stumble into her. How does she have this power over me?

"My ass is un-kickable, and you know it," I shoot back, playfully bumping into her as we gear up.

Ky smirks, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face. Her eyes are locked on mine, and for a moment, the world around us seems to fade. She steps closer, lips brushing my ear again. "We'll see about that."

The game itself is chaotic. Joel runs past me, but I manage to shoot him before he can get me. "Gotcha!" I yell triumphantly.

But then Kelm, the new guy, sneaks up on me and shoots. "Sorry, love," he says with a chuckle as he sprints away. I don't even have
