She continued signing books, her hand cramping as she did so. Being a best-selling author was a dream come true for her. She was happy that she was able to move on from her nasty break-up before she had left for college only five years ago.

"Does my princess need a coffee?" her boyfriend asked as she switched the sign to "on a break".

"Of course," she responded. She turned back around to look at the people who were browsing the books. However, a tuft of brown hair caught her eye as she choked on her coffee. His eyes caught her eyes.

Do ya, do you think about me?

Do ya, do you feel the same way?

Do ya, do you remember how it felt?

Cause I do, so listen to me, baby.

"You okay, babe?" her boyfriend asked, patting her back.

"Yeah," she lied, standing up. "I'm just going to the bathroom."

"Hurry back. I don't want to have to deal with a riot," he joked. She smiled, though it was false. she walked toward the aisle that he was in.

He was looking at the titles of classic books, his eyes focused in such a way that she had never seen him with before.

"What are you doing here?" she demanded. He glanced up at her from the Old Yeller book he had in his hand.

"As far as I know, this is a free country. I can go to any public place I'd like. Especially a bookstore, he responded. He really didn't mean to sound like a jerk, he was just a bit bitter. "Besides, what are you doing here with him?"

"As far as I know, I can date whomever I want," she fired back. It broke his heart a little to hear that, but it wasn't in his place to be upset.

And I'm not tryna ruin your happiness, baby,

But darling don't you know that I'm the only one for ya?

And I'm not tryna ruin your happiness,

But darling don't you know that I'm the only one, yeah?

"I didn't come here to argue with you," he stated, not wanting their conversation to go where he thought it was going to go.

"Then why?" she questioned, crossing her arms. "Why did you come here?"

"Look, darling, I see that you love your guy, but know that he's not good for you. Not at all," he informed as though she didn't know these facts.

She was exasperated, "And you think that you're any better?"

"Yes, actually! I don't want to ruin your happiness, but look me in the eyes and say that you don't still have feelings for me."

Do ya, do you think about me at all?

And do you, do you feel the same way?

And do ya, do you remember how we felt?

Cause I do, so listen to me now.

"Is that what you need to hear?" she asked, frustrated.

"Answer this: Do you remember how we felt? Cause I do! Tell me if he feels the same way, love," he said.

She shoved him, making take a step back. "You don't get a right to call me "darling" or "love" anymore!"

"Then answer me."

"I remember, okay!?" she finally caved in. "I remember how happy we were, and I haven't felt that way in years! But I'm happy with him. At least enough."

He ran a hand through his hair. "I'm not trying to ruin your happiness, but darling don't you know that I'm the only one for ya?"

And I'm not tryna ruin your happiness,

But darling don't you know that I'm the only one?

"You're not the only one for me," she said, trying to convince him. "I love the person I have right now, okay?"

"Then why didn't you tell him you were going to browse instead of going to the bathroom, then? You can't deny that you've never lied to me when you told me where you were going. You never had a reason to lie."

"It's not in your place to interrogate me." She glared at him.

He was quiet for a moment, "Do I ever cross your mind?" he suddenly questioned, his voice nothing higher than a whisper.

"What?"

Do I ever cross your mind?

Do I ever cross your mind?

Do I ever cross your mind?

"Wait," he paused, examining her cheek. He brought a hand up to the small bruise. She flinched, not in disgust, but in pain. "Did he do that?" His voice was heavily dipped in venom.

It had been the day before when he had, but she wasn't about to admit that. "No," she lied, "I tripped going onto a bus."

"You have buses," he said, his voice dangerously calm, his body shaking with anger.

And I'm not tryna ruin your happiness,

But darling, don't you know that I'm the only one for ya?

And I don't wanna, I don't wanna ruin your happiness,

But darling, don't you know that I'm the only one, yeah.

"Did he do this to you?" he demanded, clenching and unclenching his fists in hopes that it would lessen his anger. He knew how happy she was with him, but this, this was an exception.

"I-it was an accident," she lied again. It really wasn't.

"Your writing skills and your lying skills are at different ends of the spectrum," he growled. He wasn't mad at her as he was at her stupid boyfriend.

Do I ever, said, do I ever, said, do I?

Do I ever, do I ever cross your mind?

"Hey, you say that you don't want to ruin my happiness? Don't do anything. Please."

He was about to object but stopped himself. "Yeah," he said, "Not tryna ruin your happiness at all."
