*Not my favorite one I've done*
He arrived at the unfamiliar apartment. He hoped that she still lived there. It had been six months since he left her. Since he went on tour, meeting a million and one girls almost every night of the past 30 weeks, he hadn't had time to respond to her texts or even those sent by his family. He wasn't sure why he thought that staying with her while he was on tour was a good idea, but that was one of the reasons that he came back to Toronto, besides the short break they were having.
Makes an end upon the road,
I start to lose my sense of home.
I should have called so many times, but I
I just sat next to my phone.
He knocked on her door, knowing it'd be weird to just enter like nothing ever happened. The soft patter of footsteps sounded from behind the door before they stopped and the door opened.
"It's you!" she exclaimed, wrapping her arms around him. It took him a moment to react before he hugged her back. She separated from the hug only a bit to look him in the eye. "Why didn't you talk to any of us? We didn't even know you were alive until we saw the YouTube videos and the Vevo videos."
"I know, and I'm sorry darling," he said. "That's actually one of the reasons I came home."
"Please, come inside," she said, tugging him inside. He sighed, knowing what he had to do, but not wanting to do it the way he would. He just didn't know how he'd make himself.
Just know it takes it from me,
To end this, darling.
"Would you like something to drink?" she asked, gesturing to the table of drinks. Not one person had looked up from the Super Bowl that was playing on the television. He shook his head, holding a little tighter onto her hand that he was holding, knowing that it'd be a while before he could do it again.
"No," he answered. "Can we talk, please? In private?"
And I know you'll find someone who,
Gives you the time I didn't give to you.
I'm running low, I'm sorry but I have to go!
And maybe I will never feel, you gave me something so real!
I'm running low, I'm sorry but I have to go.
She nodded, leading him into their old bedroom. He felt both delighted and sad to find that it looked much like it always did. "What did you want to talk about?"
"Darling, you that I love you, don't you?" he asked, grabbing her other hand. She nodded. "You that I'd never to anything to hurt you, right?" She nodded. "That's exactly what why I have to do this, love."
"Do what?"
Thinking back to every night,
We just laid there for a while.
When I looked into your eyes,
I never thought I'd say goodbye.
"Do you remember that night, just before I left?"
She nodded, "You had promised that you'd only leave me if you thought that someone else deserved me more."
Tears welled in his eyes, "Just know it takes it from me
To end this, darling.
And I know you'll find someone who gives you the time I didn't give to you.
I'm running low, I'm sorry, but I have to go.
And maybe I will never feel, you gave me something so real."
I'm running low, I'm sorry, but I have to go!
"No," she whispered, feeling the tears well in her blue eyes. "You don't mean it! Please!" Tears started to stream down her face, and he could feel his heart break in his chest.
"Love, this is for the better," he said, releasing one of her hands to caress her cheek. "It's only because I want you to be happy." His thumb wiped the tears from her cheeks. "Even if it means that I can't be with you."
Her hand cupped the hand that was on her cheek. "But I am happy with you, even when you're not here all the time."
Just needed time to, to find my own,
But I promise someone will give you all you want.
And give you all you need,
You just got to see,
"I never meant to hurt you, no," he said, continuing to wipe the ever-falling tears.
"Then please," she begged, "Don't let me go-- don't leave me! Not like this."
And I know you'll find someone who,
Gives you the time I didn't give to you.
I'm running low, I'm sorry, but I have to go!
And maybe I will never feel,
You gave me something so real!
I'm sorry, but I have to go!
"I love you," he said one last time, kissing her soft lips. Their tears mixed together as they kept them together, moving only twice. The kiss lasted longer than a moment. Then another, the entire time, they were both just trying to convince themselves that they were separating for the better.
He pulled away. He lovingly wiped her tears away. "No more tears. Okay? This- this is for the best." He stood up, and let the tears fall. At the doorway, he lingered there before glancing back, finding her sobbing into a pillow. All he wanted to do in that moment was to hold her in his arms and rock her back and forth and tell her that everything will be okay, even though it wouldn't. He continued and left the apartment, never planning to go back again.
I know you'll find someone who,
Gives you the time I didn't give to you.
I'm running low, I'm sorry, but I have to go!
And maybe I'll never feel.
You gave me something so real,
I'm running low,
"I'm sorry, but I have to go," he whispered, taking one last look at the building before continuing on.
