Say Something

*I know that this isn't a Shawn Mendes song, but it was one of his covers and one of my personal favorites.*

It had been a year since she was admitted to the hospital. The car crash rendered her in a coma. There hadn't been signs of any sort of getting better. Not even a twitch.

He had gotten the call early that morning, saying that her parents were deciding to pull the plug the following day if there weren't any more improvements before then. He had felt empty for a couple hours before the desperation kicked in.

His guitar in his hand, he had left his house for the hospital where he didn't wait until someone told him to go into her room or questioned what he had on his back. His legs made him run into the hospital room, where some nurses were switching her sheets. His heart broke, knowing that she possibly wouldn't be there the following day.

The nurses only glanced at him once before quickly finishing their things. What he did was routine: he'd pull out one of the folding chairs and sit next to her, telling her about his day, only this time he held her hand and kissed the back of her hand once before squeezing it.

"Please," he said. "Please listen. Please wake up."

He grabbed his guitar and started playing.

"Say something, I'm giving up on you.

I'll be the one, if you want me to.

Anywhere I could have followed you

Say something, I'm giving up on you."

His voice cracked as he finished the first chorus. A shaky breath was inhaled into his lungs as he shut his eyes, the hot tears falling down his face. He swallowed the lump in his throat before continuing.

" And I am feeling so small,

It was over my head,

I know nothing at all."

She wasn't sure what she heard. It was like something in the back of her head, but it was so clear. So familiar. Something was bringing her back. She wanted to open her eyes. Hear him clearly. Her throat felt so dry. It felt like there was an anchor holding her down against the darkness. She had felt that way for so long.

"And I will stumble and fall,

I'm still learning love,

Just starting to crawl."

He was starting to feel the anger rising up inside of his person as he looked at her closed eyes. He hated watching it, but he didn't want her dead. He wanted her awake. He wanted her in his arms to hold her. Kiss her forehead.

He was close to yelling his next words.

"Say something, I'm giving up on you!

I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you!

Anywhere, I would have followed you.

Say something, I'm giving up on you."

Her ears picked up his loud voice. The sound was more familiar than she was, startling her. She had to speak. Tell this man that his voice... it was astounding. She wanted to say something to him. She had no idea how, though.

He took in a breath before letting more of the tears fall down his cheeks. His anger was gone, but there was still something inside of him.

"And I will swallow my pride.

You are the one that I want,

And I'm saying goodbye."

He started playing a little harder and his voice was loud and, instead of being full of anger it was full of emotion that he hadn't ever expressed before.

"Say something, I'm giving up on you!

And I'll be the one if you want me too!

Anywhere I could have followed you,

Say something, I'm giving up on you!"

She could hear him clearly now. She knew that she had to wake up. She had to say something! She didn't want to be given up on! Not by this man who was obviously sad. Obviously upset. Angry. Every single emotion that she couldn't remember feeling.

His voice was hardly loud enough to be heard as he sang the ending.

"Say something, I'm giving up on you.

I'll be the one if you want me too.

Anywhere I could have followed you,"

She couldn't hear it anymore. She wanted to hear it. In her mind, she felt around for a door to let the light in. She felt the cold at the door all around her person as she felt the door knob. Her wrist twitched as he sang his final part of the song.

"Say something, I'm giving up on you."

He looked at her one last time before swallowing. He dropped his guitar, a loud bang resonating from his actions. He held her hand and kissed her forehead. He rested his forehead against her's.

"Please," he said, his voice horace and soft from all the crying and the singing. "Come back to me. Say something! Anything! Please, my darling. Or they'll give up on you."

His tears hit her cheeks as she felt it. She heard his plea.

"You sounded... beautiful," she whispered. Her voice was slow and silent.

He looked at her as though she was a diamond he had just found. "Say something! Say another thing!"

She opened her eyes and saw beautiful brown eyes looking into her blue eyes that felt like anvils. She let out a short breath at those words. "How long has it been?" she asked. His hair was longer than she remembered.

"Does it matter?" he asked, kissing her soft lips. "Nurse! Nurse!"

He smiled a large smile that filled the room as the nurses filed inside.

"What happened?" asked the first nurse.

"She said something! We are not giving up on her!" He looked at her, his eyes wide with excitement. "You said something! I am not giving up on you!"

Fun fact about Say Something: While I don't have any ways of giving you a fun fact, I will say that I came up with the idea for this in math class. I started writing it in my math book, but this was the first time I wrote it anywhere.
