"California's just so far away. And plus there's earthquakes and the people there are bat shit crazy!"
"Can't be any worse than New York! But I'm going to be fine, mama." Billie said.
She just finished an important job interview in Los Angeles, and was offered the job on the spot. And with the salary being more than expected and the potential opportunities it could lead to, she knew she couldn't refuse. It would mean she would have to uproot her life and leave New York City, but she realized that one has to make sacrifices in order to move forward.
Her mom still had a lot of reservations, but Billie assured her that she was confident with her decision. Sadly she had to get off the phone once her mom started crying, but promised to call her once she was back in Brooklyn.
She felt guilty, but knew her mom was proud of her. She just hoped that she could convince her to visit California once she got settled. And with that in mind, she grabbed a newspaper and decided to search for potential dwellings over a nice cup of coffee.
She found a nearby Starbucks and while she waiting in line, she felt someone tap her on the shoulder.
"Fancy seeing you here."
She turned and saw Chris standing behind her dressed incognito with a baggy t-shirt, jeans, flip flops and shades. His very presence knocked the wind out of her. It had been a few weeks since they last saw one another, and even though they kept in touch through Facetime and texting, she couldn't bring herself to tell him she was in town.
Her feelings for him had become blurred, mainly because she couldn't stop thinking about that fateful night in her apartment. They never talked about it, but instead went on with their lives as if it never happened. However she was still haunted with sensual memories and wondered what would have happened to their budding friendship had their gone further.
"I didn't know you were going to be in LA." He said.
"Yeah. I had that job interview today." Billie said bashfully.
"No shit! You gotta tell me more."
"I don't want to keep you..."
"Nah, I got a little time before I meet my agent." Chris said.
They placed their orders with the barista and she modestly told him about the details of her new job, and how that even though they tried to convince her to be a full time correspondent, she settled for being a Senior Content Writer for their site, and agreed to be a commentator on a case by case basis, which meant she could keep more open schedule and could still focus on her writing career. Chris was naturally excited, not only for her new prospect but because she would also be closer to him.
"Well let me be the first to welcome you to California." He said as he grabbed their drinks and found a table towards the back.
He then revealed that even though Los Angeles had its own unique appeal, he still relished the chance to go back to Boston for an occasional break from the trivial monotony. She understood where he was coming from since they've talked numerous times about how their jobs and life in general can be overwhelming for them both, and he had been so honest with her about finding other ways to center himself.
