Chapter Nine
A few days had passed and Billie was still avoiding Chris like the plague. She threw herself into her work, but was haunted by the embarrassment of her mistake. She kept replaying the horrible incident inside her head and she couldn't get past her humiliation. Who knew that three little words could ruin everything? Even if she didn't mean to say it, there was no forgetting that it happened. She knew the right thing to do would be to talk it out with him, but the memory of him laughing in her face upset her. So she figured her only option was to cut her loses. And because he was leaving, it was the perfect opportunity for her to regroup.
However Chris was at his wit's end. He tried to be accepting, but he was never a fan of passive aggressive behavior. He hated that their relationship was strained, and he wanted to set things straight before he left town. But it didn't help that she was being stubborn as shit and kept screening her calls. On the flip side, she did respond to his texts, but with one word answers. He didn't think she was the type of person that ran away from conflict. And it was obvious things were never going to be the same with them. But they needed to address this like adults.
So he made one last ditch effort to clear the air by inviting her out for drinks at their favorite bar in West Hollywood. He urged her to come because it would be their only chance to talk before he left for Boston the following afternoon. And when she didn't response right away, he tried to give her the benefit of the doubt.
But as time passed, his feelings of empathy turned into disappointment. He thought she was different, but now she was turning out to be just like the other girls of his past—the types that were more interested in playing games and making him feel like he's done something wrong. And waiting for her at Pearl's Rooftop for over an hour, he finally snapped.
"This is bullshit." He slurred.
It could been the fact that he was on his fifth drink, or that he was looking like a chump, but he was done trying to make things work with her. If she wanted to be immature and continue with the silent treatment, it was her loss. He had enough on his plate, and the last thing he needed was to deal with another crazy chick with a laundry list of neuroses.
Because it was still early, he decided to hit up some other friends and left the bar angry. But little did he know that Billie had every intention to meet with him. Unfortunately, she blew two tires and spent most of the night waiting for roadside assistance. She tried to tell him that she was on her way, but her phone died before she had the chance. And once she getting her car towed, she caught a cab to the bar but he was long gone. She even used a payphone to see if she could reach him, but it went straight to his voicemail. Sadly while on her way home, she suddenly got a pit in her stomach.
She realized that her pride got in the way, and she hoped that it wasn't too late to admit she was wrong. She didn't expect to fall for him, and she wasn't sure where things could lead. But she needed to face this head on, and get everything out in the open. They were supposed to be good friends after all. And being able to communicate openly was what made their friendship incredible.
