Light pierced my eyes and I growled, loud and long, raising a hand to shield my eyes. I felt someone gently touch my arm and my eyes shot open as I grabbed their hand with a grip so strong it could have broken bones.
His gaze felt familiar, comforting and the pressure in my head slowly lessened the longer I stared into his eyes. My body felt stiff and sore as I released his hand and tried to sit up.
“Woah there tiger! Slow down!” I growled as he tried to push me back into the mattress, smacking his hands away. The pressure in my head kept building until I felt like I would explode; I wanted to throttle the one who touched me, who tried to stop me from what I wanted.
With a shove I pushed him away from me, throwing him into the opposite wall as I stood from the bed, pushing the covers off me. Shakily I stood, my knees almost buckling underneath me. I headed towards the door as the man groaned and slowly stood.
“Evan.” Something in his voice made me turn around, the pounding in my head seemed to fade away as I looked at him. “Evan.”
“Yiannis?” I felt like I’d snapped out of a trance; one where I simply wanted to kill everything and anything in my path. The pressure in my head and the overriding emotions disappeared. I felt my knees buckled but he was there. “Oh god, what happened?”
He settled me back into bed, pressing the blankets around my body and took a seat next to the bed. “You were attacked.”
I frowned, looking around my room and down t myself; nothing had changed. “W-what? Who? When?” I didn’t want to believe it but deep down I knew that he would never lie to me.
He gently took my hand, pressing his lips to my skin. “A werewolf Evan, he bit you and you’ve been unconscious for three weeks; we almost thought we were going to lose you. That wolf was the son of the alpha that Eve killed, he was looking for vengeance, and when his DNA made its way into our system, it changed you; just like it changed Eve. Eve came here because when she was pregnant and human, a she-wolf pushed her down the pack house stairs in jealousy because she carried her best friend’s child. Eve broke her spine in the fall and lost the baby, her parents and our alpha did all they could to save her so they changed her into a wolf by biting her; we never thought it would work, but it did, and when she woke, she shifted into a wolf- she was human no more.” I heard his words but my mind didn’t register what he was saying until he squeezed my hand. “Evan?”
I turned to stare at him, unbelieving, uncomprehending. “W-what?”
His thumb ran over my knuckles as he stared at me. “You’re a werewolf Evan; immortal, indestructible.” Immortal? What in the holy hell?
“How do you know?” I couldn’t comprehend anything he was saying; I was human, I had been my whole life and I always would be. I hadn’t even known creatures like werewolves actually existed until one showed up on my doorstep; I’d always thought they were bedtime stories designed to scare children and I couldn’t believe that I had been turned into one of them. “D-did I-I change i-into a-a w-wolf?” It was hard to try to get the word out but I managed; I felt like someone was going to jump out and yell ‘surprise, we’re just kidding’, but like with my prison sentence, it didn’t happen.
He chuckled and shook his head. “No you didn’t shift; but you healed a day after your fever broke and your body stopped fighting the wolf’s DNA, so we know that you have our healing, and presumable immortality. Most female werewolves cannot shift so it’s not surprising than you can’t either, and frankly I’m glad that you didn’t; it’s extremely painful and female weres that can shift are a hot commodity and targeted by many.”
I was immortal now? It was all too much to handle and I felt tears slid down my cheeks; what had I done to deserve this? I just want a normal, human life; after everything that happened I wanted to live out my life on the ranch, and then when my time came, be at peace in death.
