“Hey Evan, how you doing?”

I gave the twins a small smile as they walked into my room with Elliot and Davy trailing behind. “Been better.” I could still feel the silver from my last shot in my system, though the pain had dulled. My eyes drooped as the sedative forced my wolf to remain dormant, though I refused to sleep; I’d done enough of that in the last few days. Even though I was weak and sick it was comforting to feel that I was alone in my mind again.

“Do you need anything?” Elliot asked.

My eyes drifted to the window where I could see a lake and thick green forestry. “I want to go outside.” The last time I’d been inside for this long was when I was sent to death row; I hated being trapped indoors and I just wanted fresh air, to feel the wind on my skin. They hesitated and I knew that were going to say ‘no’, so instead I slowly sat up. “I’ll just crawl then.” I knew I was acting like a spoilt, stubborn brat but I couldn’t handle being trapped inside for much longer. Even before I was turned, I had enjoyed the outdoors and prison had been my own personal nightmare.

“I’ll go see if the doctor has a wheel chair.” Elliot said and the twins followed her.

After a few seconds Davy slowly approached and took a seat next to me. “I never apologised for my behaviour at lunch the other day, sorry for blowing up.”

I gave her a small smile and shook my head. “It’s fine, I understand that you all love Yiannis and from all that he’s told me, mates are sacred. I can’t imagine how it would feel to wait five centuries only to find that your soul mate died.”

Davy’s gaze grew distant as she leant back into the chair. “Some die looking for their mates, others never find them and fall in love with someone else and sometimes mates reject each other.” The last seemed to cause her great pain and it looked like she was about to burst into tears.

Before I could stop myself the words spilt from my lips. “Were you rejected?” My eyes widened as she chuckled sadly.

“No Evan, I rejected my mate.” Why would she do that though? All this talk about how amazing mates were, how scared weres considered mates and yet she rejected hers? “I’m asexual and I didn’t even know he was my mate and I feel that it wouldn’t be fair to lead him on when I’m just not attracted to him.” She muttered, looking down at her lap as the twins entered the room, one pushing the wheel chair while the other trailed close behind.

She quickly stood, offering me a smile before she walked to the door. “It was nice to meet you Evan; I wish you and Yiannis happiness in your lives and hope to see you again someday.”

I was silent as Alex… no it was Caine, helped me into the wheel chair. I felt like a sick, weak child but I knew that the alternative was far worse and so I said nothing; this was far better than the fate I had faced with an out of control wolf who had a bad case of blood lust.

They wheeled me out of the pack house and I breathed in the fresh air, enjoying the warmth of the sun. I sat with the twins until Elliot approached with a girl who was slightly shorter. She had a radiant smile and long beautiful locks of dirty blonde hair cascading down to her hips, flawless tanned skin and eyes that reminded me of my own.

“Evan, I’ve heard so much about you.” Her voice was deeper than I expected and fairly husky. She offered me her hand and I shook it. “I’m Eden, Elliot, Caine and Alex’s sister.” At my confused expression she laughed; she couldn’t be related to them, each of Jenna’s children looked almost exactly like her and Klaus. Eden shared absolutely no similarities with the siblings. “Adopted sister.” I couldn’t get a word in edgewise as she continued to ramble on with a giant smile. “Sorry I didn’t catch you at the dinner; Hunter is far too overprotective of me.” She glared at a man who stood near the door of the pack house, watching us with a piercing gaze. He was only just shorter than Yiannis with thick blonde hair and a muscular body, though that was all I could see of him from the distance I sat. “But don’t mind him he’s just a massive puppy.” I heard him growl and she laughed, taking a seat on the ground.

“How did you meet him?” He watched her like a hawk and I wouldn’t put it past him to have kidnapped her, judging from the way he acted more like a guard than a mate.

“I didn’t, he found me when I was a baby and so Jenna adopted me.” She shrugged and smiled at Elliot. “But I have an awesome family so I guess it’s worth putting up with Hunter.”

“Yiannis told me to remind you that you have injections before boarding the plane, unless you want to stay longer.” I knew that he wanted to stay for a while longer but I still had the ranch to run and I knew that he wouldn’t stay without me. I had enjoyed meeting Yiannis’ family though and I hoped to come back again soon.

I took one last look over the mountains and then turned the wheel chair around. “Let’s do this.”

I sat on the bed as the doctor injected slivery liquid straight into my arm. He’d told me before hand it was part silver, part wolfs bane and part of a sedative that targeted wolves. It burnt like the sun but I refused to show my pain to Yiannis because he’d stop it immediately.

As it spread throughout my body it felt like molten lava was running through my veins. I squeezed my eyes tight as my body went rigid. This was only the beginning though and I knew it would only get worse before it got better.

Yiannis was perched next to my bed clutching my hand as I lay there incapacitated from the pain. I heard the door open and I looked to see Jenna standing there with a grim expression. Without a word Yiannis squeezed my hand and stood as the doctor pulled away, finished for the day.

He and Jenna left but I could still hear them through the gap in the door. Jenna sounded far too tired as she spoke frantically to Yiannis. “Hunter attacks have increased in the last month and they’re taking more and more people. It’s become much harder to hunt them down and some have begun involving the human governments; soon the entire world will know of our existence and there’s nothing I can do to stop it! I’ve worked hard to prevent it but war is brewing Yiannis and none of us are safe. If you, Evan or any of the wolves on her ranch are attacked or need refuge, you send word immediately and I will send men to retrieve you; things are about to get a whole lot worse Yiannis we need to be ready.”

I sensed more than heard him embrace Jenna as the doctor pulled the needle and out and tended to the small wound that wasn’t closing. My head felt foggy as the poison spread throughout my body and the pain slowly faded as I fell into oblivion.

At least I’d be going home soon, though how safe was home now that war was brewing? I was no longer human, I was a wolf; the hunted.
