Chapter One •present day•
I sat next to my mother's bed, on my knees, tears wailing behind my eyes. A silent tear slid its way down to my elbow, which'd been paralyzed when I was twelve. Oliver stood behind me, his gaze solemn. Mom's hand reached up to my cheek and smeared a tear on my face with her thumb.
Reaching to the necklace around her neck, she unclipped it and wound it around my neck, relocking it securely.
"Mum.." I whispered sadly, my voice coming out a croak. Renn stared silently at her grandmother who lay in the hospital bed, her hand on the wound that injured her severely.
"Mum, I'll... I'll get that.. Person. And when I do, he sure will be regretting this.." I said with a stronger voice. I dared not call the person who'd shot me and my mother both a man.
But she hadn't heard me. Her eyes dulled, and scenes seemed to flash on her pupils. Then her breathing stopped and her heart rate dropped until it was flat. The corners of Oliver's mouth turned down, and he crouched on the ground next to me. Renn curled up in my lap, her bony frame unnoticeable in my numbness.
She's gone. Forever. She didn't say goodbye...
As I thought that, a breath escaped from her mouth and traveled upward. My husband and daughter stared at me, puzzled, as I focused on the invisible icy breath that read 'goodbye' encircled by memories we'd shared.
"Goodbye, mum. See you later, I guess..." I muttered.
