Chapter Ten

I parked the car, and began to peer around. Spring had brought green leaves and warm sunshine to the Safari Springs, and I glanced around in amazement at the beauty.

"Are we going swimming or not?" Samy asked from the back.

The five of us climbed out of the car. I led the way down the wooden planked ramp and halted in front of the small spring.

Suz squealed, grabbed Hell-cat's hand, and dashed to the top. Green, slimy algae rippled with the water, but Suz jumped onto the small stone platform and splashed across, followed closely by Hell-cat.

Eliza jumped up behind them and squeaked as the algae tickled her foot.

"This was a good idea," Samy said as she dipped her toes in the water. Sunshine made her purple bangs look neon.

I nodded. "I just thought it would lighten-" I broke off as a man appeared from the falls, staring at the girls as they played on the slimy algae carpet. He leaped over to them, exchanged a few words, then took a step back.

He glanced at me and stared, holding my gaze. And then he leaned forward, and shoved Suz. Suz shrieked and frantically grabbed Eliza's hand, who leaned on Hell-cat. Hell-cat lost her balance and fell backwards, landing safely on the rock. Suz and Eliza balanced on the edge of the rock, and then plummeted to the bottom of the falls.

I watched in horror as the man turned and smiled at me and Samy, then walked away.
