Chapter Nine
Someone nudged my side gently. My senses were instantly alert, and my eyes snapped open quickly. Hell-cat was crouched next to my bed, her eyes barely peering over the edge and squinting as she smiled. Eliza was next to her, her arms crossed as she pulled her cryaotic mask back over her eyes.
"Breakfast is ready. Unless you want me to eat it." Hell-cat said as she rose to her full height. I winced and climbed out of bed, checking the clock. 10:56 a.m. it read.
"Don't. You. Dare!" I squeaked and ran down the hall. Suz sat on the couch, a lollipop in her mouth. Samy stood in the kitchen, flipping an omelet with her pan.
"It's about time I saw your face." Samy complained. Eliza poked her side, and reached across Samy's arm to grab an omelet, then passed it to Hell-cat. Hell-cat nodded and sat down beside Suz.
"So... What's happened so far?" I asked. Samy glared at Eliza.
"Well, we were calmly watching the teli-vision, on the news channel, when suddenly... Er. We saw your house. And you. Flipping out. Anyway, we woke you so you could eat before Suz got to your omelet." Eliza randomly jabbered.
I flinched and sat down. Blinking, I stared at the news. They'd now carried on to weather. I listened in. "And there seems to be a new hurricane. Level two hurricane Erin is approaching the east coast of Florida and should work its way towards Texas along the gulf..." I swallowed the rising panic on my throat and turned away from the TV.
"Isn't uh.." I pulled on the collar of my shirt. "Hell-cat going to college across the state? She's flying there?" I asked quietly.
"Yes, but the storm shouldn't have reached here by then." Answered Samy calmly. I glanced uneasily at the tv and back at Hell-cat.
"But still." I stared at Samy. Only she was aware of my FFF (Floridian Fear of Floods). She gave me a tiny nod, but jumped when a sizzling sound crackled from the stove, and then with a huge WHOOSH, "nature set FIREEEE, TO THE STOVE!" Samy quickly extinguished it before smoke could alarm the fire detectors.
Suz growled. "Quit worrying, Mel." The lollipop fell out of her mouth. Hell-cat swooped it up and put it in her own mouth, smiling.
There was a silence in the living room and kitchen. I wanted to start a conversation, but didn't know how. I switched my mind back to the tv. It was still on weather. "...Erin is advancing quickly. But today at the east end of Texas, we have a sunny report at 89°F. So you happy campers can go hiking without difficulty..."
I remembered my favorite place to go; Safari Springs. It had a waterfall-type system with a pool at the end. But the available point where the waterfall starts had a concrete ledge we could walk on.
"You guys wanna go to the springs?" They knew what I meant. In unison, with Suz practically hopping up and down, they nodded.
"I hope you plan on driving cause I am taking. A. Nap." Samy declared. "To rest my boutifulnessess!"
"Are you wearing your mask to the springs?" I asked Eliza; she nodded. "And we don't need to change; my car needs a wash anyway!"
I pointed to the sky and yelled in a strange voice, "Then to the springs shall we going!" Then I stomped out of the living room, grabbed my keys, and rushed to the car. Sitting inside, after everyone had settled, I giggled as Samy yelled "ONWARD!"
And off we drove to the springs.
