She could feel the presence outside the door of the hospital after Hawk left, but Addie just wanted to forget there was anyone there. She looked to her brother with teary eyes; Caanan showed no change and she knew there was a good chance he wouldn't make the night. The soft knock on the door heightened her senses as she prepared herself for every scenario that popped into her head. But to see a girl about Hawk's age was surprising.
"You must be Addie." She extended her hand which Addie reluctantly took, "my name is Dace. I am Hawk's boss." Dace spoke as she turned to look at Caanan, "he really is more handsome than any of the pictures Hawk had. She loves him so much."
"If she loved him, she would be here." Addie snapped.
"By my understanding, you ordered her gone. She did just that to keep you and your brother safe because that is the kind of person Hawk is. She went with her sociopath brother because she loves him." Dace explained. Addie's eyes fell as she realized Dace was right. Everything that had happened, and Sadie leaving was because she did truly love Caanan.
"Is she going to die?" Addie asked looking at Caanan.
"Honestly? I have no idea. Lincoln is very unpredictable but if he came back for her, you bet your ass it's for a good reason and it could end badly." Dace explained getting up and going to Riley who had entered the room. "Well?"
"They walked right out the front door to a waiting SUV. Where it looks they are headed to Lejeune." He explained as it seemed to click for Dace.
"I know why he came for her." She spoke leaving the room. Riley followed and let the door close. "Stand down, call everybody back. This is their fight, not ours."
"What? We can't just leave her with him!" Max said as he almost growled.
"Right now, Lincoln isn't a threat to Hawk. He will protect her if push comes to shove, I have no doubt. They are after a bigger fish. Jaime Trainor." She explained as it clicked with the rest standing there.
"Jaime is still alive?" Riley asked. He and Jaime were partners in a time that felt like ages ago before he went off the deep end and disappeared after killing a good handful of men he swore to protect.
"He disappeared for a while before an agent on assignment seemed to catch a lead that put him on an island in the Aegean Sea." She explained as t didn't know what to say. What was there to say? This was now a family matter. They knew none of them had any business to become a part of what was going to take place when Sadie and Lincoln got where they were going. Dace knew when the time was right, Hawk would come home.
They all stood in silence as the door opened again drawing all of their attentions. "Will you stay until Sadie comes back then?" Addie asked as Dace turned.
"Yes, we will stay near to continue to protect you and Caanan. Sadie would definitely want it this way and to know you both were safe while she was away." Dace explained as Riley and Max nodded leaving the area taking both of their phones from their pockets.
"Well do you want to come in?" Addie asked moving from the doorway.
"I will actually go take care of a few things, but if you'd like I will come back?" Dace asked glancing at her phone in her hand then back to Addie. "I do need to attend to this." Dace responded to Addie's nod, showing she wanted Dace to come back when she could.
Addie moved back into the room, leaving the door cracked she could hear Dace pacing in the hall talking in hushed tones to someone. When she heard Sadie's name they called her, she perked up but still couldn't hear anything. She sat back in the chair taking in the sight of her brother again.
She finally took his hand gently putting her other to his forehead. He was warm and she also noticed the sweat that lightly coated his skin. He wasn't wearing a gown, the gauze and bandaging that was covering his chest was completely exposed. Everything seemed to finally come crashing down on Addie's shoulders. She hunched over, her head hanging low as her hands gently squeezed her brothers' still, clammy forearm.
"You can't do this. Caanan Markus, you need to come back to the living, dammit. I can't lose you too. Please, little brother, don't leave me. Don't leave Sadie. She loves you, okay? She loves you more than I could ever fathom. Please don't leave us." Her whispering pained voice was too much that the tears flowed faster and Dace stepped up to rest a hand on her shoulder.
"He's all I have left. I can't imagine life without him." Addie cried as Dace knelt down to hug her and she just held her.
