Finn awoke to a blurry white light, he could see indistinct shapes, some of them moving nearby. He blinked slowly and the world began to focus. He had something over his face that he tried to take off, but his hand was weak and he ended up just flailing his arm. "What...what's going on" he slurred, he was disorientated, not knowing where he was or what was happening.
"Finn?" a bright light shone in his eyes making him squint and try to move his head away. "Can you hear me?" He nodded weakly. "You're in the hospital, do you remember what happened?" Hospital...he shook his head as if to say no, but as he did so memories started to flash randomly into his mind, but it soon became a rush of nightmarish images that quickly overwhelmed him. He started to breathe too fast when his mind became fixed on one image, his stomach started to clench, he was panicking. "Finn, Finn! Calm down, breathe," but it was too late, he sat up, and, leaning over the side of the bed, threw up violently.
"M...Millie" he whispered, before passing out.

The next three weeks were a blur, he woke for short periods of time during which his family and friends tried talking with him, but he only said a few words here and there. He was physically exhausted, his body having been through major trauma and blood loss, his muscles atrophied from lack off use. His leg was heavily strapped from the operation to repair the damage, as was his shoulder and chest. Nobody spoke to him about what had happened, instead trying to distract him with talk of the outside world, family stuff, gossip, whatever they thought would take his mind off that day.
A few days later, Caleb, Gaten, and Noah were visiting Finn. "Hey buddy, how are you feeling today?" asked Gaten. Finn just gazed over his shoulder, looking out of the window into the corridor. He saw Sadie walk past and stop to hug someone, wait, is that Millie's brother...
As Sadie walked in Finn sat up, wincing slightly, "what's Charlie doing here?" he asked. Everyone looked up, surprised, it was the first thing they'd heard him say all day.
"What do you mean?" asked Sadie, "he's visiting Millie."
Finn felt his stomach drop, "M...Millie...what are you talking about?" he said, his voice cracking.
"What?" said Sadie, "she's been moved to the room next door...didn't anyone tell you?" He could feel tears falling from his eyes, he couldn't quite believe what he was hearing.
"Finn, what's wrong man?" asked Noah
"She...she's not dead?"
The guys just looked at each other in shock. "Oh my god, no one told you?" said Caleb, realising what Finn was asking. "We thought you knew."
"We just thought you didn't want to talk about it" added Gaten.
"Is she...is she ok?" asked Finn.
"She's just been brought down here from the critical care unit, she's been in a coma and still is. She was critical for a long time, they almost lost her a few times" said Sadie, her voice trembling, remembering her hands covered in Millie's blood, trying to keep her alive. "She's stable now, they think she's ready to be brought out of it, she'll be monitored 24/7 here."
"Finn, what are you doing?!" said Noah loudly. He'd ripped off his sheets and was trying to get out of bed but was being held back by his drip.
"Help me...please..." he begged, through teary eyes. The others shook their heads. "I have to see her...please...please!" He ripped out the cannula attaching the drip to his arm. Ignoring the pain and the blood he tried to stand, but his legs gave way almost instantly. Caleb and Gaten caught him.
"Come on man, don't be stupid" said Caleb sternly.
Finn was crying now, "please, you don't understand, I thought she was dead, I just need to see her, please."
"...I'll check there's no one coming" said Noah, making the decision for everyone. "It's clear...let's go."
Gaten and Caleb were either side of Finn, supporting his weight. He could barely use his left leg at all because of the injury, so they helped him hop slowly to the next room. Millie's brother Charlie was sat in front of the bed blocking his view, but as he stood to see what the commotion was behind his he saw her. "Finn, what the hell are you doing? You're meant to stay in bed" Charlie said. "What's wrong?" he added, looking confused at Finn's face.
"He didn't know, Charlie, he didn't know she was still alive..." said Sadie.
Finn was deaf to everything, all he could see was Millie lying on the bed. She was surrounded by monitors, a mechanical ventilator breathing for her, her eyes taped shut to protect them, drips giving her body everything it needed to survive. He shrugged off Gaten and Caleb's support, and forgetting the pain in his body limped over to the bed. He sat on the tall chair next to her, gently laid his head on her shoulder and, grabbing handfuls of the bedsheet, broke down completely.
"Mr Wolfhard, you mustn't be out of bed...yourarm, it's bleeding, come on now" said the doctor. "Nurse! wheelchair!" heshouted, lifting Finn to his feet and placing him in it. Finn didn't have thestrength to protest, instead he just stared at Millie almost in disbelief, overwhelmed by the tiny spark of hope that had been lit inside.
