Chapter 12

Marcel's POV

I walked into the office, bright and early on Monday. Since waking up this morning, I had this amazing feeling, kind of like every thing was right in the world. Cheesy, I know, but it's the only way I can really describe it. I mean Veronica was finally my girlfriend, as of Friday night, around seven o'clock. Girlfriend. The word itself gave me this overwhelming sense of joy.

I dropped off the load of copies at my desk and headed over to Veronica's. I hadn't seen her all weekend, we talked on the phone for about an hour on Saturday, before she randomly ended the call. I couldn't wait any longer to see her. As I got closer, I saw her organizing papers, taking a second to gather up her long, wavy, dark brown hair, and pulling it over her right shoulder, leaving it to fall over her right breast. She was magnificent, and finally she was mine.

"Hey." I greeted as I reached her desk. I leaned over, about to place a kiss on top of her head, when Veronica immediately pulled back.

"What are you doing?" She whispered harshly, her eyes frantically darting all around us to make sure no one was looking.

No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't stop the sting from her rejection. Why would she pull away? I mean we are together...right? I give her a confused look, not being able to form my question into actual words.

Veronica abruptly stands up, "Follow me to the lounge, but don't make it too obvious." She says lowly, as she pushes past me.

What the hell is going on? I don't think I've ever been more confused in my life. I trail behind Veronica into the employee lounge. Much to Veronica's advantage, nobody was in there. She spins around to face me, watching me.

"What the hell happened out there?" I vociferate.

"W-what do you mean?"

Her simple question angered me. Was she not just out there?

"I'm talking about me trying to kiss my girlfriend, only to have her pull way from me! What was that about?"

Veronica bites on her bottom lip, an action that at any other time would have turned me on immensely.

"Am I not your boyfriend?" I yell.

"No, no, you are my boyfriend, Marcel!" Veronica shrieks.

"Then explain to me what happened!"

"It's just..." Veronica takes a deep breath and falls silent, fiddling with her necklace.

"Unbelievable." I mutter. "Veronica, I can deal with all the secrecy about your personal life. I get it you're a mysterious girl, one of the many things that attracted me to you. I respect that you don't want to tell me all of your secrets, but when it comes to us, there are no secrets. You got it? So I'll ask you again: what is going on?"

Veronica throws her hands up in exasperation, "Alright, alright, I'll tell you." She takes a deep breath and looks at me with golden eyes, holding a nervous gaze. "I, uh, just don't want people to know about us, yet."

My heart drops into my stomach, at least that's how it feels. "Do you even want this, Veronica?" I ask, hurt completely evident in my voice and I'm sure in my facial expression as well.

"Marcel, of course I want this!" She shouts with a shocked expression.

"Really? Because it doesn't seem like it."

Just then realization bitch-slapped me...hard. I know what this is about.

"Wow. It all makes sense now." I say coldly.
