Chapter 21

*Author's Note: I posted a picture of what I imagine Melanie to look like, which is Mila Kunis*

Marcel's POV

I was furious with her. I had specifically told her to stay put until I had gotten back home. But of course, Veronica being Veronica and throwing caution to the wind, she goes herself. I just don't understand what is her problem with letting someone else help her out. I knew what I was getting myself into, she has made it clear, on more than one occasion, that Liam is a man you don't want to mess with, but if I'm keeping her safe and helping her out, then I guess Liam and I will be seeing a lot more of each other. Yeah, I was terrified of Liam, the man is ten times bigger than me, but I refuse to let him hurt her. The image of her battered body came into view, he could have easily repeated what happened last time and that put me more on edge.

The car ride to Louis' apartment was tense and silent. I could see Louis glowering at the back of Veronica's head through the rear view mirror, he wasn't too pleased that I asked him to sit in the back. We pulled up to the front of Louis' apartment and sat for a moment before Louis shuffled to get out.

"Thanks." Louis mutters and swings the back door open. He stops for a moment and opens his mouth to utter another word, but decides against it and pushes himself out of the car, slamming the door behind him. I watch as he jogs up the steps to the third floor, once again the interior of the car is left in dead silence.

My gaze shifts to Veronica, her face is slightly scrunched up as she fiddles with her golden necklace, I go to say something, but Veronica beats me to it, her voice resounds through the car. "Are you upset with me?"

I sigh and nod my head a bit before remembering that she isn't looking at me. "Why did you go if I specifically told you not too?" I ask in annoyance.

"You're not my dad, Marcel." Veronica jokes, but wipes the smile off her face when she notices that I am not amused.

"You could have gotten hurt." I state.

"I know, I know. I just wanted to do it myself. It's my clothes, my ex-boyfriend, why should you be the one to risk getting punched in the face...or worse..." She trails off, her gaze locked on her lap.

"Veronica..." I start, but she quickly cuts me off.

"But I knocked him out!" She exclaims and for the first time that night raises her head to look me straight in the eyes. A proud smile is plastered on to her face and her eyes twinkle with excitement, I can't help the smile that makes it's way onto my face as well, she's so happy. "I've never done that before. I've never struck him, and I just feel so -" Veronica stops at a loss for words, trying to describe exactly what she was feeling, but truth be told I don't think there would ever be a way to perfectly describe it.

"Free?" Her face softens and she smiles.

"Free. I've never felt so free."

The silence falls between us again, but the smile never leaves her face, I think about starting a conversation, but something in her expression tells me that she's taking in today's events and the emotions that have been brought forth within her. I start the ignition and shift the car out of park.

"You know, I think I deserve a reward." Veronica finally speaks, breaking the silence.

"A reward?" I raise a brow at her and pull out of the parking lot.

"Yeah, you know, for finally taking a stand." She leans back in her seat and looks out the window.

I chuckle and decide to humor her. "Alright, what kind of reward did you have in mind?"
