"The Mechanic"
Chapter Forty-two
'It Hurt So Damn Bad.'
Scene...
The Next Morning
Demi's POV
"Joe," I mumbled, my face pressed tightly into the nape of his neck. My voice came out muffled against his skin. "Joe," I tried again, my eyes still squeezed shut with fatigue.
He stirred, shifting in his sleep only to wrap his arms around me and pull me even tighter.
"Joseph," I said, smiling to myself.
"No," he grunted. "No, it's not morning yet."
Oh, that morning voice of his.
"I think it is," I responded. This was only a guess, as I still hadn't opened my eyes. But it was rare for me to wake up before Joseph, so for him to still be home meant that it had to be morning.
"I don't want it to be," he chuckled, still tightly wrapped around me. "I'm too comfortable."
My fingers found his chest, and slowly they began to draw gentle circles on his skin.
"You're gonna be late for work," I whined, tilting my head back. Finally, I pried my eyes open, adjusting to the morning light that spilled over onto the both of us. As my gaze fell onto him, I couldn't help but grin at just how gorgeous he was. I brought my hand to his chin, shifting so that my face lined up perfectly with his. "Joseph," I kissed his lips.
"Let's just stay in bed today," he grunted, his arms still around me. "We can order in and just lay here . . . and eat, and eat, and eat all day -,"
"You're delirious," I laughed, scratching at his beard. "You love your job."
With a deep breath, Joe finally opened his eyes, fixing them on me.
"I also love you," he said. "And considering I've just discovered this, I'm not too eager to leave you yet."
I smiled at him.
"I love you, too." Stretching, I pulled away from him, rolling over and reaching for the bedside table. Upon it lied both of our cell phones, with which I had intended upon checking the actual time. I grabbed Joseph's first, pressing the power button and lighting up the screen.
"Anyone call?" He asked, and only then had I remembered that he was watching me.
"Your dad," I replied, handing him the device. He sat up then, taking the phone from my hands. I then grabbed my own phone, waking the screen as well.
Instantly, my eyes widened.
"Oh shit," I said out loud, sitting straight up in shock.
"What?" I heard Joseph say, but my eyes were stuck on the screen.
I scrolled and swiped through the images that appeared, my heart feeling cold as ice; my face becoming flushed.
"No," I said, bringing my hand to my mouth.
"Demi," Joe said, his voice stern. "What is it?"
My expression flustered, I turned to him, my tone helpless.
"I thought this was over." I gripped the phone tightly in frustration. "I stupidly thought that this would just go away and I was . . . I was so wrong."
He was on heightened alert now, his eyebrows pointing downward in concern.
"Let me see," he said, and with no hesitation, I scooted over to him, placing the phone in front of the both of us.
