One and Only

Soulmate AU: Where you can't physically kiss someone who isn't your soulmate. Like you're repelled by the forces of the universe.

Age 5:
Lauren Jauregui walks around the playground, looking for her best friend, Normani. Suddenly, she trips over this rock. But before she can make contact with the ground, a small pair of arms catch her and lifts her up.

Lauren looks at the person, studying their face. She takes in the freckles dotted across his cheeks, the dark black hair, the blazing blue eyes and the charming smile he has. Lauren's tummy turns and she smiles at the boy. "Thank you!" Lauren exclaimed.

"You're welcome!" the boy returns. He doesn't take his arms away from Lauren's waist and just stares at her, eyes going from her lips to her eyes and to her lips again.

Lauren smiled and makes the move to kiss the boy. As her lips were about to touch the boy's, she suddenly felt a strange force pull her away.  "WHOA!" Lauren exclaimed as she tripped backwards.

"Why did that happen?" Lauren asked the boy. The boy shrugged.

Later that day, Lauren rushed up to her mommy when she got home. "Mommy! Momma!" she yells as she runs to her mother. Her mom catches her with open arms and lifts her up, balancing her on her waist.

"Yes, baby?"

"Mommy, I tried to kiss a boy today-"

Clara cut the little girl's sentence in half. "What? Why?"

"Because, mommy! He saved me from falling! So I tried to kiss him but then something kind of pulled me away from him or something. I don't know what happened mommy! Why did that happen? I wanted to kiss him!" Lauren explained to her mother.

Her mom smiles at her. "Baby, do you know what a soulmate is?" Five year old Lauren shakes her head and looks up at her mom. "A soulmate is kind of like your other half. Someone that's destined for you. It's someone who is going to be your life partner. Are you following?"

Lauren nods slowly, trying to understand and take in what her mom just said. So Clara continues. "There's this thing; you can't kiss anyone unless it's your soulmate. Like there's this weird force of the universe or something that pulls you away if you're going to kiss someone who isn't your soulmate."

"Oh! I get it! So the boy isn't my soulmate? Where do I find mine?" Lauren asks giddily.

"When the time comes, your soulmate will come to you, Lauren. You have to wait," Clara told her daughter and kissed her forehead.

"So I should try to kiss everyone I meet?" Lauren asks curiously.

Clara laughs and shakes her head. "I mean you can try that, but I suggest you don't. There's just going to be this feeling that that person is the one. That that person will be your forever. So wait for that feeling, honey."

Lauren nods, kisses her mom on the cheek and then sprints up to her room  to do whatever her little heart desires.

Age 15:
"Mani!" Lauren called for her best friend.

"What?" Normani yelled from the kitchen, where she was raiding Lauren's fridge.

"Come up here already!" Lauren yelled back, wanting her best friend to be with her so she can rant. She heard heavy footsteps and her door opened, revealing Normani Kordei with a bag of chips, two cans of sodas, and chocolates.

"Yes, please, speak now, Lauren," Normani sarcastically says.

"Okay, so I am so pissed. It's been 15 years of my existence. Where the hell is my soulmate? It's unfair! You already found yours! Where the heck is mine? When is that soulmate of mine? Why is she hiding? Where the fuck am I meeting her? So far, I've almost kissed like, I don't know, a dozen people? Do you know how hard it is for me to want to kiss someone the being pulled back because the universe just wants us to have one and only one person to kiss?" Lauren raves.
