The moon gleamed as it peaked out from behind darkened clouds.
I walked down Miyashita Park, hoping to get to my destination. I looked ahead, constantly looking over my shoulder, paranoid that someone was following me or that someone I once knew was after me. Passing by some other people I brushed past them, ignoring whatever they were doing. Making my way onto Cat Street, I stopped and turned to see the store 'Jupiter of the Monkey', its light pooling out of the store windows. I looked through the window to see them showcasing a brand new pin that had come out. It's convenient for players in The Reaper's Game, that's for sure.
The Reaper's Game is played in the Underground (UG), a plane just above the Realground (RG), where the living live. Ran by the Composer, people who have died can play to earn a second chance at life. However, in order to play, players must give up an entry-fee, something they value the most. Through a one-week competition, players must complete missions, that are given out by a Game Master, who is a reaper designed to be your final boss at the end of the week. Upon completing the game, players are given back their entry-fee, and are given four options; Become a reaper and try to erase players, be erased and cease to exist, play the game again if not allowed to live again, or come back to life if the Composer wishes them to.
Reapers were like administrators in the Game, and had a duty to erase players in order to survive themselves. They could summon Noise, which were a race of beings, that took on the form of an animal or mythical creature. All noise have different abilities and exist solely to take out players, or anyone they are directed to, and exist between the UG and RG.
The living can usually only see what's in the RG, and are oblivious to what's happening in The Reaper's Game. However, my case is different. As a part of a higher plane, that's above both the UG and the RG, I can see both the UG and RG, as well as observe what goes on in The Reaper's Game. This higher plane was inhabited by Angels, much like myself. Though, my angelic wings were hidden when I tuned down my frequency. My frequency was like my power that could be sensed in a way. With a high frequency, I could go into the Higher Plane, but when I tuned down my frequency, I could travel into the other planes.
I barely noticed when I reached the cafe, WildKat. I opened the door, making a bell chime, and walked in. The owner, Sanae Hanekoma, was standing behind the counter, cleaning a cup out. Mr. Hanekoma was like a fatherly figure to me when I first met him, so I was always close with him. He was the one who introduced me to my best friend many years ago. Yoshiya Kiryu, or just Joshua as he prefers to be called.
"Hey, (Y/n). Been a while since I've seen you. How have you been?" Mr. Hanekoma asked. I smiled at him.
"I've been doing good. Uh, hey, I have a question, have you seen Joshua anywhere? I can't find him anywhere, and it's worrying me," I said, leaning on the counter, propping my head up on my hand.
"You've always been like that, you know. Worrying about him when no one else was. It's cute actually." My face flushed pink and I hid it between my hands.
"Mr. Hanekoma," I whined, wanting him to stop.
"Face it. Anyways, I haven't seen him around. Did you check the rooftop of 104? He likes to hang out up there." My eyes widened in realization and I stood up straight.
"No! How could I forget to look there?! Well, I'm off. Bye!" I shouted, waving to him as I ran out of his cafe. I ran all the way through the underpass and through the Scramble Crossing until I reached 104. I went around the building until I saw a rusted, and really old ladder that looked like it could break at any moment. Checking over my shoulder to see if anyone was paying attention, I gripped the ladder and hoisted myself onto it, carefully climbing.
