Piper got up from her seat when Jason, Leo, and I walked back into the tent. Her hands gripped the hem of the dusty lilac dress she was wearing nervously, and her eyes were wide. I can tell she wasn't mentally prepared for this. But, were any of us were? I mean, we knew we had to perform at one point, yet I don't think it's gonna set in till we're walking up the steps that we're singing on greek god tv. Like, how crazy is that?
"Hey, Pipes," Jason placed his hand on her shoulder. "You're gonna do great, okay?"
"That's not what I'm worried about, though," She said, and within a single breath she scrunched up her eyes and half yelled, half spoke. "Imchangingmysong!"
"I'm sorry, what?" Braxton startled us from the entrance. "Did you say you're changing your song?"
"Yeah," Piper answered and sighed. "I changed my mind last minute from Halsey to Bridgit Mendler's song Ready or Not. Sorry, I don't want to cause problems."
Braxton raised an eyebrow and chuckled, "You're not causing problems, Will heard you mumbling to yourself this morning about changing to your song and when you said what song you wanted to do he told the rest of the cabin so we prepared for the song change."
"You..."Piper looked from Braxton to Will. "You stalker!"
Will laughed as he hid behind Nico. But he didn't have to hide for long as Braxton was leading Piper to the steps. Her hand still clenched on the edge of her dress as she walked up the steps. Piper's choppy hair was pulled back into a French braid, the smaller braids in her copper colored hair gave the larger braid texture, I hadn't noticed it before. Maybe because I wasn't looking at the back of her head twenty-four seven. But, after a roar of applause, Piper waived to us before walking out onto the stage.
Just like Reyna, Piper stood stiffly in center stage, the mic stand already at the perfect hight, but she sang, "Hey, hey, hey."
I saw her swallow her pride and begin the first verse. "I'm the kinda girl who doesn't say a word, who sits at the curb and waits for the world."
"But I'm about to break out, about to break out, I'm like a crook tonight," Piper smiled and grabbed the mic. "I caught you staring at me and I was thinking clearly, and now I'm like a bee and I'm huntin' for the honey," She bounced her shoulders to the beat of the song, letting the music take her. "And I'm kinda shy but you're super fly yeah, I could be your kryptonite."
Out of the corner of my eye I saw Jason, his face dusted lightly with pink, but his eyes never left the screen. A small smile could be seen behind his hands as he covered his mouth. I knew that he loved Piper, he loved her with every fibre of his being, and I could sympathize with that. I feel the same with Annabeth. Yet, as I watched Jason watch Piper, I could tell he was still nervous about performing. He was going next and the song he chose was about Piper, he told me, before Piper changed her song to a song about him.
"Ready or not, here I come," Piper sang dancing around the stage. "Where you at? The night is young."
"In the crowd the music's loud, but I will find you," She pointed to the crowd who danced and cheered with the bubbly daughter of Aphrodite in the spotlight. "Ready or not, here I come, I like your face do you like my song? Just sing it la la la la la la la and I'll find you!"
Then, like a light bulb went off in her head, she walked from the other side of the stage slowly to the exit to the tent. It was like she was teasing us, trying to get us out of the tent to dance along with her. "Ready or not, here I come here I come. You're like a breath of fresh air in my lungs." Piper walked down the steps quickly and dragged Annabeth to the stage, Annabeth grabbed my hand and I grabbed Jasons. The line continued on till all of us were dancing on the stage to Piper and the crowd. "You and me dance from the night to the dawn, ready or not here I come boy it's on."
"Ready or not, here I come," She continued to sing, booty-bumping us as she made a point with her song. We weren't ready to dance, but yet here we are. And as she finished Braxton came up on stage holding a second mic in his hand. Behind us a stage hand brought out a chair placing it next to Frank who stood near center stage. We all knew that Jason was going to sing next so we made our way back to the tent, the only ones left were Piper and Jason.
"Wow, lots of energy from that song, good job Piper," Braxton commented. "Could you please sit on the chair behind you? It's time for our next performer, here is Jason Grace singing Classic by MKTO!"
The drums began from the back of the stage, Apollo kids ready to create the music to go long with Jason's singing. He, too, stood stiffly as he first began. Piper was smiling behind him, blind to the hundreds of people on the other side of the spotlight, the only person she cared about was the bright blond son of Jupiter in front of her. And when It came to the chorus, he turned his back to the crowd and focused on Piper, "Your over my head, I'm out of my mind, thinking I was born in the wrong time."
He took the mic off the stand and grabbed Piper's hand, bringing her off her seat as he continued, "One of a kind, living in a world gone plastic, baby you're so classic."
Just like how Jason, Leo, and I walked behind the curtains to be Reyna's back up singers, the rest of us did the same for Jason. He sang "four dozen roses" and I tossed him the bouquet the Demeter cabin prepared so he could give them to Piper. Kaleidoscope eyes lit up wide and her smile brightened as Jason placed the fully bloomed flowers to her. The more he sang the more we did to make the song special for him and Piper.
Long before the talent show, Annabeth had told me what Piper felt as if Jason doesn't want to do romantic dates with her. Like the good bro that I am, I told Jason, he said that the only reason he hasn't done something romantic for Piper is because he's hand a hard time thinking what to do. So when Apollo announced the talent show, Jason IM'd me right after he heard his name was called to plan his serenade for Piper. Obviously I helped, Annabeth gave him most of the ideas and let him take credit for the plan, but nonetheless, it was going to be the special 'date' Piper wanted.
It wasn't long before Jason began the bridge, so quickly we put on the cheesy decade costumes. Frank and Hazel wore 40's costumes popping out behind the curtain, Annabeth and I joining them right after with our 50's sock hop poodle skirts and leather jackets. Calypso dancing out in a sixties attire that she wanted to keep after the show, Leo disco dancing up next to her dressed for a disco with Reyna and Nico in 80's rock clothes. But the moment Jason sang the chorus, began to dance a choreographed 1920's swing dance routine around Piper and Jason.
"You're over my head, I'm out of my mind, thinking I was born in the wrong time," Jason still holding her hand spun her in a circle. "Let's start the rewind, everything is so throwback age—" Behind them we looked to the crowd and sang the echoes of "I kinda like it like it" before continuing to dance. "Out of my league, old school chic, like a movie star from the silver screen."
"You're one of a kind living in a world gone plastic," Jason looked at her as he sung the last lines of the song, the rest of us disappearing one by one behind the curtains. "Baby you're so classic." He dropped the mic from his mouth and kissed Piper, cheers and whistles were heard from the crowd, and we laughed walking back to the tent. It was fun to dance on the stage in front of everyone, those four days of practice paid off for the thirty seconds of performance we did for Jason.
When Jason pulled away, Braxton walked up from the other side of the stage. "That was a wonderful performance, tell me Jason, did you plan this?"
"Um, yeah, I did," Jason smiled, hand in Piper's. "I've been planning this for almost two weeks when I wanted to do something special for my beauty queen."
The crowd "awed."
"And everyone else, they practiced the dances and the costume changes too?"
"Yeah, I asked them to help me and they said they would, so this past week we were practicing the dance, as well as ur own songs, and building the stage," Jason confessed.
"You have good friends," Braxton turned to the crowd. "We'll be taking a fifteen minute intermission, then our very own Nico Di Angelo will be performing when we return."
