Dragonfly
I went to Dawn's house next, and she reluctantly told me how they were navigating through the forest and got stuck. Spectre was knocked out and Cloud had a broken arm. He was calling for help when Dawn and Oak heard them. They called for the only medic, scientist, and father figure they had on the island at the time. "I often heard Cloud singing a lullaby to his brother late at night." She sighed wistfully "Good times. They were so cute!"
Spectre flung me against a tree between houses. He gazed silently at me before throwing me down and walking away.
Oak told me that Spectre and Cloud could both teleport, and they sensed when the other was hurt or in danger. "They were creepy as little kids. I didn't know if they were even human. Well, I still don't know if they are..." He glanced around suspiciously.
I got kicked out of Oak's house after asking about the mining accident. "Don't bring such a painful topic up next time you visit!"
"Please, I think I can help him if--" I received a door slam in reply. "Well, alright then." I got up and brushed the dust from my pants. Discouraged, I headed back to my house. There was still so much I didn't know! Did he use a weapon? Did Spectre's gray jacket belong to his brother? Were they even close? Did Spectre really kill his brother? How? Why? I pondered these questions as I made my way home. However, I didn't make it before my soul turned blue. I yelled in shock. I tried to run, but I was stuck in place.
"Did you seriously have nothing better to do?" A figure emerged from the trees.
"Spectre...?" I asked, trying in vain to turn around and see my attacker.
"Were you just bored? I'm sure Lilith and Mephiles would appreciate your help building houses for themselves if you just wanted something to do. Now, curiosity..." He walked out in front of me. "Not so easily fixed. Were you curious? Maybe you just secretly hate me. Is that it? Were you just looking for some dirt on me?"
"Spectre! Please, I think I can help you. Just, I--"
"You remind me of him, you know." He twirled his magical staff. "Same smile, same personality, same good intentions, similar stats. Same... foolhardy tendencies. He was brave. You just don't know when to quit. And now? Well, I hope you were coming to ask me. If not, I guess you don't have much of a choice, do you?"
He threw his magic staff in the air and caught it without letting go of my soul. "I've still got it, you know. I didn't think I would after four years. I guess it's like riding a bike. You never forget. Ya know, pal, you can't understand how this feels. Knowing that one day, I'll explode and kill everyone I love. It... It just makes it hard to make and keep friends, ya know?"
He threw me all around with his magic. "This is fun, but where are my manners? You just wanna get this over with, huh pal? Yeah, I do too." I was set down tenderly. I didn't run. I held his gaze, a silent challenge radiated from him. A determination to defeat me. I grabbed my hammer and held it out in front of me like Oak holds his trident. "That's right," he smiled. "Let's just do it. You wanna know about Cloud? Prove you are strong enough to avoid his fate."
Only blackness surrounded me. I didn't get startled. I just stood there, ready to defend. "Throw everything you've got at me, Spectre!"
