Songbird

     I was reluctantly dragged to the grand opening of Princess Lilith's new house. I'm usually more of a homebody, but if it makes my friends happy, I'll do anything. Dragonfly helped both siblings build their houses, and I found reason to like both. Meh, both were a bit big for my taste. Definitely not the welcome I received.

     I remember arriving in Skyrise and building my house. Arriving especially. My first exposure to the people here was the bros., Spectre and Cloud. I had made my way into the woods where a 13 year old Spectre found and told me: Hey friend, you're new right? That's hilarious. Just... Avoid my brother, Cloud, unless you really enjoy confrontations. And traps. See, we made a bet that if a girl washed up here-- Oh man, he's coming! Quick, hide somewhere! Looking back, I don't know why I was afraid. Cloud was quite the little sweetie when he wanted to be. I fell in love with him after he found me and tried to fight me. He realized that he couldn't hurt his new friend and lead me back to their house.

Spectre! Is that a new arrival?

Yup.

Oh my God! *Ahem* New arrival! You will not get past me!

Yup.

My array of dangerous traps and puzzles will stop you!

Yup.

I will then take you to the kingdom, where we can be best friends.

Yup.

Spectre, are you patronizing me?

Yup. Oh, wait, nope.

BROTHER!!

     I laughed at the memory. The puzzles were easy, and I found it sweet that Cloud, 19 then, tried so hard. I was 20 at the time. I'm now 26, and Cloud's gone. It still makes smile. Cloud and I adopted a child together. Well, I adopted the kid and Cloud promised to help me raise him. The child grew into a handsome and strong young man. We were quite the family.

Heheh! I'm getting stronger, Daddy!!

Yes, yes you are, #£*+•<~. I'm so proud of you!

Boys, dinner's ready!

Just Cloud, ... Oh no... What was his name?! Did I really forget my child's first name? How? It's right on the tip of my tongue!

     Well, in any case, Oak was training the young boy to fight one day. My son came home in a small black box. Cloud went out, determined to find out why Oak killed him. It tortured him, not knowing why Oak made me so miserable. He spent so much of the time up all night. If only he'd known that he was running out of time. I never knew if he found an answer. Cloud was about to tell me, but... Well, now Dragonfly knows exactly why. Tensions exploded following the accident, not just regarding Oak and Spectre. I went after Oak. Not because of the accident, but because of my child. And my best friend.

No! You can't go after him!

Why not? He killed Cloud! He murdered your husband!

Well, you killed my child. I'm not about to let you kill the only loved one I have left. If you really want to kill him... I'm afraid you'll have to go through me.

W-What?

In other words, Oak, fight me or run away!

     I found a power within me that I had never seen. I locked myself in my house and didn't stop crying. Several people came to my door, asking how to help. I turned them all away until I heard a knock at my window.

Knock knock. Who's there? Boo. Boo who? Come on, it was just a joke. Don't cry.

     The scared little voice came every day. Until one day, I answered.

Knock knock.

Who is it?

*gasp* Oh! Um... I know! Anita!

Anita who?

Anita 'nother moment to think about it...

     I don't know what it was, but I howled with laughter and told a joke back. We told another. And another. And another until I couldn't contain my laughter. I discovered later that it was Cloud's little brother. The one who had greeted me when I first arrived. For the first time in weeks, I smiled.

     I opened the door to my house and stepped inside to find Hope, sleeping in her room. Fear not, my child. I thought. Nothing will ever hurt you here. I promise.
