Apocalypse AU

The streets were empty and bathed in the hellish orange glow of the dying sun. The winter air was dry and snowflakes blew in through the wide hole in the brick wall. They fluttered through the wind, rounding the gaping mouth of broken clay teeth.

I stared out into the world, watching, waiting. My grip on the rifle tightened as I listened to the sounds of a distant storm.

Things clattered behind me and I quickly whipped around to check on my friend. Edd stood still, eyes wide and clutching an overwhelming armful of canned goods to his chest. Another can rolled from the pile and hit the icy tile floor with a thud.

I relaxed my shoulders and breathed a sigh of relief. "Sorry, Tord." He whispered with an apologetic smile.

"Put that stuff in the bag quickly. We gotta go." I turned my attention back to the opening in the wall. Glass crunched under the soles of his boots as he continued loading the duffle bags with supplies.

My lips tightened against my teeth as I waited for the brit to finish. Someone most definitely heard us.

I glanced over my shoulder to see him lugging the two bags towards me. "We've been here too long. Tom and Matt are most likely back at the safe house by now." Dark brown curls bounced in acknowledgment.

Taking one of the packs from him, I slipped it over my torso and adjusted the strap over my chest before marching forward.

Strong winds whipped passed us as we emerged from the run-down store. Dangling wires clacked together in the frozen air and the cold nipped at our nose and ears.

The city was deserted.

My gloves shifted off the trigger of my gun as I scanned the tall, grey buildings. Icicles spiraled down from ledges like twisted fingers. White puffs of steam rose up from our mouths and danced off into the fiery sky.

"It's so cold!!" Edd huffed as he tugged on the thick strap hanging off his shoulder. A flurry of snowflakes blew up into his feathery hair. He squinted past rosy cheeks at the breeze.

I could feel the corners of my lips cracking as a smile found it's way on my face.

He had always been there for me, even through all of this. Sure, Edd could be an asshole sometimes, but he was reliable. I cared a lot about him.

My gaze drifted up from the Brit's kind round face and I felt my stomach drop. He shot me a questioning look before turning to see what I was staring at.

Tall dark purple clouds loomed over the city, creeping across the red sky like a lion stalking prey. The next storm was here.

The four of us had been pretty lucky, avoiding the wave of blizzards and keeping warm, which was ultimately the reason why we had survived this long.

Clouds twisted and churned within the supercell as the distant growl of thunder echoed through the air. The jagged shelf cloud sitting on the edge curved down like the teeth of a beast threatening to swallow the city whole.

"Shit, Tord, what do we do?" My attention turned back to the brit in green. His eyes were wide with terror.

My lips tightened against my teeth as adrenaline filled my veins. Military instincts kicked in. "Drop the bags, we have to move."

"This is our food supply! We-"

I raised a gloved hand to silence him. "We can always come back. But right now, we at least have to find shelter."

Edd quickly nodded in agreement but denied my orders. The duffel bag I was carrying haphazardly slammed into a snow bank. I then threw my riffle over my back.
