Papers crumpled under my fingers as I shuffled through the stack of documents. It had been a long day of boring paperwork. The captains were doing well and my troops were advancing with ease. There was no need for me to get involved.

All that was left was mundane work.

As I read through the sheet of recent expenses, the rusty hinges on my office door squeaked open and clicked shut. My eyes left the ink numbers to greet the guest. A familiar face screwed in distress met my gaze.

"Are you okay, Tom?" His mousy hair was tangled and messy, unlike the tidy cut I was used to seeing. A black tie hung loosely over a torn, blue shirt collar. Two thick horn buds poked painfully through the pale skin above his steel goggles.

Something was clearly wrong.

The brit whipped around at the sound of my voice. Pink lips were lightly parted in surprise. "What's going on?" The shock in his expression quickly dissipated, leaving behind the anxiety and discomfort.

"N-nothing, but I might need some help." Tom's hand rose to rub the back of his neck.

I raised my brow and left my chair, moving to the front of my desk. If there was a threat in the building, I needed to move fast.

It had only been two years since my soldiers pulled him off the streets. Two years since he became a member of the Red Army.

Even after we discovered his true potential, some unseen part of me couldn't bare to put him on the frontlines with the other soldiers. It's hard to describe what came over me that day but I couldn't let him die. So I appointed him to an assistant position.

Whether it was spontaneity or something deeper is up to interpretation. No matter the truth, it is irrelevant to my line of duty. My word was law.

He'd work with me and serve as a last defense if the tides changed. My knight.

Now he stood before me, stuttering nervously and picking at the irritated skin around his horns. "I've b-been struggling to think for a couple days now, I thought it would just be a one-off thing but it's only g-gotten worse. I-I feel hot and jittery.... and...."

The brit's voice trailed off as his face darkened under the green LED glow.  "What kind of help do you need?"

Before I could say anything else, Tom rushed forward and wrapped strong hands around my shoulders. His cherry lips softly collided with mine.

My whole body froze up and my eyes widened. This was not at all what I would have expected from an assistant, much less my former rival.

Butterflies took flight inside my chest as if they had been patiently waiting for such a moment. The flurry of delicate wings beat against the inside of my ribs. A deep red blush found it's way onto my cheeks as the pounding of Tom's heart met my own.

My mind was swept away in a whirl of flying thoughts and questions.

Could this have been why I did what I did that day? To have him by my side, to see his handsome face everyday and hear his voice? A fanciful idea that I'd eventually get the chance to experience something intimate?
