Jessica squeezed her eyes tight, running her fingers across the edges of the paper that held all the evidence; the very same paper that held the truth. She shook her head in disbelief and gently slid the edge of the paper against her index finger.
“I’m really sorry, Jessica,” Grace said, resting her hand on Jessica’s shoulder.
As soon as Jessica felt Grace’s touch, her breathing became unsteady. She took a deep breath in an attempt to soothe herself. “I think it’s best if you leave.”
Grace took a step back with her hands raised in surrender. “I understand that you’re mad, but don’t shut me out.”
Jessica only sighed. “If you’re not going to leave, then I am.” With her back turned to Grace, she grabbed her coat without bothering to put it on. She pulled all of her long black hair to one shoulder and swung the front door open, shivering at the brush of the cold November air on her skin. Determined to leave, she shut the door and trudged over to her car.
Grace watched as Jessica’s car pulled out of the driveway and silently smirked to herself. She pulled out her phone, dialed a number and held it up to her ear. When the person on the other end answered, she smiled.
“She’s all yours.”
