“Oh my gosh! Are you saying that your beloved girlfriend took the diary?” Jessica asked, with sarcasm dripping from her words. She placed a hand on her heart and gaped. “Oh my!”
Aiden stared at her a little longer. “No, she wouldn’t.”
“Here’s the good news,” she kept her voice at a normal level to restrain Aiden from freaking out. “No one can destroy the diary and no one can unlock the diary. So, don’t stress.”
He fell silent when he remembered that he had tried to destroy the diary. “Well, you mentioned Gray. We’ve figured out that his real name Mitch and he is really handsome. In the journal, you wrote that he takes advantage of girls.”
Her brows furrowed, a dark line forming. She was taken aback by the sudden information. “Takes advantage?” she repeated, not sure of what to think.
“That’s what you wrote.”
“Is that how I died?”
Aiden shrugged.
“It can’t be,” she insisted. “If it was, then all the pieces should come together in my mind by now.”
Aiden sighed inwardly. “How do you get those instincts, then?”
Jessica avoided his gaze, knowing it was a touchy subject. “Steven says that if ghosts stay too long in the in between, they’re stuck here.I’ll remember everything about my life but I won’t be going to a higher…or lower…place.”
“So, you’ll stay here?”
“To bother you for eternity!” she added. She rolled her eyes and placed a hand on her hip. “Though I do enjoy annoying you, it’s not at the top of my priority list.”
His voice remained cold and strained, “Well, our only lead is that Mitch supposedly takes advantage of younger girls.” He folded his arms against his hard chest and poked the inside of his cheek with his tongue. “Should we check that out?”
Jessica collapsed onto the couch and let out an exhausted sigh. “I wouldn’t call it 'taking advantage' considering that the girls probably volunteered to have sex with him. He’s a handsome guy. He shouldn’t have any trouble.”
Aiden shifted his weight and suppressed a sigh. “Jessica.” He sat down beside her and laced his fingers together. “Have you ever thought that maybe we won’t figure it out? Let’s say we do and you move on, what will happen to me? I’ll have all this new knowledge and won’t be able to share it with anyone.”
“Steven,” she said quickly. “He’ll still be here.”
"Steven is your friend, not mine."
"Steven isn't my friend."
"If Steven isn't your friend and he isn't mine, then why are we talking about him?" An amused grin crept onto his face. "Besides, I would prefer to have friends who actually exist," he deadpanned, "no offense to you."
Jessica shrugged nonchalantly and stared off into the distance. He was right. If he found out who killed her, there was nothing he could do about it. He would know everything and would have to remain silent.
