Miss Amber had an odd grin on her face as she bounced me up and down with an eager walk. God, I wished I'd had that rabbit.
We got to a smaller shack. This actually looked like a lab when we walked in. Unlike the apartments made from a hospital. It looked less makeshift. A giggly black haired young woman shot into the room and hugged Miss Amber.
"Oh my god, I think we finally have something!" She jumped up and down and made a strange squealing noise. I felt a lot more uncomfortable when she pulled Miss Amber into another room. This tore her hand off of mine and left me alone in a room filled with...science.
The room was large. But cluttered counters filled most of the space. Papers scatter all around. A lot of chemicals scattered about the counters, some spilled some corked. There were tons of them either way.
Seeing as how most of the counters took up the space, the area I was standing in got pretty small. That's when my breathing had become heavier. I could hear my pounding heart in my ears as the room began to blur. The red came back to the corners of my vision and I panicked.
"MISS AMBER!" I shouted.
Seconds later, Miss Amber had almost slipped when barreling into the room, "sorry, bud!" She took my hand again and I calmed a bit. She then led me into a bigger room with the same bubbly girl.
"Hey there, kido," she flashed a bright grin.
I responded with a weak smile.
"He's not a talker," Miss Amber had said while shaking her head.
"Oh," the woman's dark brown eyes widen, "sorry, kido!"
Amber pointed to her, "that's Jade. She's the friend that I told you about."
I nodded as a signal that I understood her.
Miss Amber turned back toward Jade, "so you're close," she said gleefully.
Jade bit her lip and nodded. She then did something I never thought would happen, her face turned to a normal expression. "But," she said," there are still a few complications." She pinched her fingers together.
"Like?" Miss Amber countered.
"Like, we aren't there yet. We have to figure out a way to have the human body produce MASS amounts of some chemical. But, we can't figure out which chemical we need."
Something in the room beeped and Miss Amber groaned. "God damn it," she hissed, "why now, Blake. Why now?"
Jade turned her head to the side.
Miss Amber turned toward her, "could you watch him? I've got another assignment."
She stormed out as Jade turned to face me, "well then..."
"What's her problem?" I dropped the shy kid act.
Jade looked surprised that I had talked. "A lot is going on for her right now," her face screwed into a more depressed one.
"Like?" I said.
Jade sighed and looked down, "she lost her husband to an assignment. She told him not to bring a weapon because he has been one of the fastest people working in that department. He had gotten away without using a weapon every time. Thus, leading to overconfidence. Eventually, someone to fast came after him. The girl that he had been assigned to retrieve had come back screaming and crying the story of what had happened. Apparently that time, he just wasn't fast enough."
"What was his name?" I asked.
"Why would that matter," she stared at me with teary eyes. She clearly missed him as much as Miss Amber did.
"I'm just curious."
She choked back tears,
"Jackson."
