I woke up with a boy about my age, 15, standing over me. He smiled and laughed while I just sat there, wondering what to do. He reached his hand out to me to help me up. "I'm Caleb." he said while putting his hand out for me to shake.
I took his hand and said, "Hi, I'm Cassy." He smiled at me and I smiled back. I noticed that there was another bean bag on the floor, a few feet away from the one I had slept on for the night. "Were you sitting there?" I asked Caleb.
"Actually, I slept there." he replied quietly. He didn't say anything after that, so I asked him why he had slept there. "Do you promise to keep it our secret?" he asked me and I nodded my head yes. "Well, I kind of ran away from my parent's house a few weeks ago, and this is where I have been sleeping for the last two nights."
I looked at him, and wondered if he was telling the truth. "Are you serious?" I asked him.
"Yeah. My dad and I hadn't' been getting along, so I decided to leave for a while." he answered me. This surprised me that somebody else felt the same way I did. I didn't feel so alone anymore. He had trusted me with his secret, so I decided to tell him mine.
"I just ran away from my mom's house last night." I told him slowly.
He looked at me for a few seconds and then realized how scared I was. "Where are you planning on going?" he asked.
"I have no idea." I honestly told him.
:"You want to come with me? We can go wherever you want because I don't really have a plan either." he said with a smile on his face as he laughed at himself. I realized that I had no where to go, so this would be my best shot to get away from my mom.
"Sure, sounds great." I said.
"Awesome! Let's go!" he quickly said back, "Are you hungry? I sure am! Did you bring any food or cash?" I shook my head. I really hadn't thought my running away plan through before I had left my mom.
Caleb realized I was serious and said, "I didn't bring any money, but I brought some canned stuff. We can share and will come up with a plan later." I smiled at the thought of him offering to share his food with me. Nobody had been so nice to me and so generous in a long time.
We walked out of the Walmart and walked to the nearest park. There were several benches, but we picked the one farthest away from most of the people. Caleb opened the bag he had been carrying and pulled out two cans of soup. He handed me a can and then pulled out a can opener. He opened his and then reached for the one he had given me to open it.
"Sorry I don't have spoons or anything. And this really isn't the greatest breakfast food..." he apologized.
"Don't worry about this. Soup is a way better breakfast food than what I would have had to eat if I was still on my own." I assured him. I still couldn't believe that I was here, with Caleb, far away from my mom. It felt great.
We slowly sipped our soup, and then decided to leave the town. "Where do you want to go?" he asked me.
"I really don't care. I just don't want to be anywhere near my mom." I told him.
"Well, there is a town about ten miles away from here. If we start walking now, we should get there before it is dark." he told me.
I thought about this. I was getting farther away from my home and beginning to get scared. My mom was probably worried to death. 'But do I really care about her anymore?' I asked myself. 'No. I don't.'
"That sounds great! Let's get going!" I told him with a smile. We packed our bags back up and headed toward the next town.
We had been walking for about an hour and weren't even close to being in town. I started to think about my mom. Did I even leave a note? No. I hadn't left anything. What if she was worried? Did Caleb leave his parents a note? I decided to ask him.
"Did you leave your parents a note? Like to tell them you were leaving and not to worry?" I asked him.
He thought about this, like he had never thought to do this. "No. I didn't. I never thought to do that, but I honestly don't care that I didn't tell them where I was going. Like they would care anyways." he muttered.
"Well I didn't either." I told him.
We walked for a few more hours and then came to the town. There were plenty more places to sleep in this town but we decided on an old, abandoned house at the edge of the town. It was very dark, but cozy. I layed on the floor and after about an hour, I fell asleep.
