I woke up on the floor of the abandoned house. I knew Caleb was already up because I could hear him walking around the house. He walked into the small room I was laying down in and smiled. "Good morning!" he said with a smile on his face. I could tell that he was tired, just by the way he walked.
I couldn't believe that I wasn't at my mom's house, and was running away with Caleb, who I had just met yesterday morning. This is crazy, I thought to myself, absolutely crazy. "Morning," I said sleepily.
Caleb went to the kitchen and started looking through all of the cupboards and drawers. I guessed that he was looking for food. The kitchen looked like it was in pretty good shape, almost like it had been used recently. He found several cans that we kept.
I began to help him, when we heard a voice coming from the upstairs. "Is someone here?" the strange voice said. Caleb looked at me and motioned for us to run. We grabbed our things and bolted out of the house. We ran to the other side of the road and hid behind a small hill. Just as we were fully hidden, a very old woman came storming out of the house. I thought the house was abandoned?
The grass needed cut, the house needed painted, and no cars were in the driveway. The woman looked around. She looked very confused to me. Once she had looked around the house, she shook her head and went back inside her house.
I looked at Caleb. "Wow," I said.
"Yeah. I guess it wasn't empty," he spoke, "but it's weird because we didn't hear her at all in the middle of the night. Trust me, I didn't sleep much." I felt bad because I hadn't noticed the bags under his eyes until then.
"I'm sorry," I told him, "Where to now?"
He thought about this for a minute and then said, "I think we should stay in this town for a while. Check out the school..."
I stopped him in the middle of his sentence, "You want to enroll in the school?"
"No," He laughed as he said, "We will go to the school tomorrow and pretend that we are new students. It is so much fun! I have only done it three other times, but it is really interesting."
"Okay, sounds like fun," I told him, although I thought that our plan sounded ridiculous.
For the rest of the day, we walked around the town and planned our one day at school. It was about 6 PM when I realized that we needed a place to stay for the night. "Where are we going to stay?" I asked.
"There is a bridge at the edge of town and I was thinking that we could just stay under there. I was watching the news at one of the stores we visited and it is supposed to be really warm tonight." he told me and I was excited to sleep outside. It would be like camping.
We took about a half an hour to get to the bridge and found a nice, level spot to sleep. The stars were all out and the moon looked huge. I couldn't believe how beautiful the sky could be. I curled up on one of the blankets I brought in my bag and looked at the stars until I fell asleep.
