When I woke up the next morning, Caleb was already packing our bags and getting ready to go. For the first time we had started this adventure, Caleb looked like he had gotten a little sleep. This made me remember last night, when he had helped me fall asleep. The thought of that made me smile.

When Caleb saw that I was awake, he smiled. I smiled right back and said, "Good morning."

"Good morning," he said back and then smiled again. He actually looked happy.

I helped gather our things and we left the bus as soon as everything was ready. We walked off of the bus and walked along the road. We had passed about five houses, when I saw a dog. It was a short, black dog, and looked a lot like my last dog, Fluffy. I couldn't help myself. I ran to the little dog and began to pet him. Caleb ran over and that was when I noticed that we were in someone's backyard.

Caleb was now petting the dog too, and we sat there with the dog for about a minute. A door slammed and all three of us turned around. Out of the house came a man with a shotgun, and he was obviously drunk. "What are you doing here?" he said, and I barely managed to understand every word.

I looked at Caleb and he motioned for me to run. We both stood up and bolted. We ran past a few houses and I decided to look back. He was still running and was getting closer and closer to us. "What do we do?" I shouted.

"Follow me," Caleb told me, so I did. He suddenly made a sharp turn, and ran down a small road. I was right behind him, but looked back again at the drunk man. This time, he had the gun up and was about to shoot.

"DUCK!!!" I shouted and then pulled Caleb down to the ground with me. Just as we touched the ground, the man fired the gun. I was scared, nervous, and a little worried. What would my mom think?Caleb looked right into my eyes with a look that said 'Thank you.' I smiled at him and then jumped up to continue running.

We ran and ran. As we were running down a small road, we both saw a car. "Get in!" Caleb shouted. I ran over to the car and hopped in the passenger seat. Caleb jumped into the driver seat and was surprised to see keys in the ignition. He looked at me and smiled before slowly starting the car. He sped off. I looked back and saw the man throw his gun and run the opposite direction we were driving.

Caleb and I drove for hours, passing by about five towns. I was slowly falling asleep but tried my best to stay awake so that I could keep Caleb company. Finally, he stopped at a small house. I was a bit shocked, but when he got out, so did I. He walked right up to the front door and rang the doorbell.

A little old lady, probably about sixty, opened the door. "Oh! It's my little Caleb!!" she said with a huge smile on her face.

"Grandma! How are you?" Caleb said, looking just as happy as she was.

"I am doing fine! You have gotten so big since the last time I saw you! How are your siblings?" the lady said, "And who is your friend?" She asked this question and then smiled at me.

"Amber and Katie are doing fine and this is my friend Cassy," he said, and then also smiled at me. I blushed and then followed him into the house. It was small, but cozy. It was warm, and smelled like freshly baked cookies.

"Kids! I just made cookies! Would you like one?" Caleb's grandma asked. He took one and so did I. It was the best cookie I have ever tasted. It was soft, warm, and very sweet. "My name is Rose, but you can call me grandma. Caleb always has, so feel free to do the same," she said sweetly.

"Okay," I said a little awkwardly, "Thanks Grandma." I smiled at her and she smiled back. Her smile was just like Caleb's, soft and loving.

We all sat in the living room, watching television and talking about random things when Grandma asked a question I was hoping she wouldn't think of. "So what are you two doing here? And where are your parents? Do they know you are here?" she asked.

Caleb sighed and I knew he was going to lie."We are on a road trip," he started,"both of our parents know. We stopped by here to see you. I haven't seen you in so long and I really wanted Cassy to meet you. Is it okay for us to stay over a few nights? We just need a place to stay and this will probably be cheaper than a hotel."

"Of course you can stay here! Anytime! Why didn't you just tell me you were on a road trip and needed a place to stay!" she laughed, "But I only have the one guest room, is that okay?"

Caleb blushed a little and hid a grin, "That is fine Gramms. Thanks for letting us stay. Ready to go Cass?"

When he called me "Cass," I was happy, because that is a cute, short version of my name, but I was sad because my dad ALWAYS called me that. My dad. I miss him so much. Before he died in a freak car accident, my mom was the perfect parents. But five years ago, when he died, she changed completely. That is the reason why I left the house and will never go back.

"Yeah," I finally responded. I followed Caleb down a short hallway. He turned left, went in a door, and sat on a bed. I did the same.

We got under the blankets and he got close to me. "Hey Cass," he wispered.

"Yeah," I managed.

"I think I like you." was all he said and my heart skipped a beat. I smiled, but didn't say a thing.

I fell asleep quickly. Partly because I was actually in a bed, but mainly because I was with Caleb.
