The morning sun was pushing its way through the heavy curtains that hung against the windows. You groaned, attempting to get out of bed. Tight arms were wrapped around your waist, keeping you there. You couldn't help but smile, letting yourself settle back down into the mattress. Eventually, his arms loosened from you and he rolled over. You waited for a few minutes then slowly got out of bed.
You tiptoed through the house, seeking out the kitchen. You never missed out on your chance to have alone time. You pulled some stuff out of the fridge and cabinets, placing them on the counter as you started to cook breakfast. You made sure to make a separate plate for the Joker, knowing that he'd probably be hungry when he woke up. Once you were done cooking, you sat down at the table and enjoyed your peaceful meal in solace. You watched the sun peak out from behind the clouds, a soft smile on your face. You picked up your empty plate and brought it to the kitchen. You paused for a moment, thinking that you heard something from upstairs. He should sleep for another hour or so, or at least you hoped.
Once you assured yourself that you'd been imagining it, you stepped softly over to living room, the couch calling to you. In your hand was your favourite book, one you'd been trying to get through for a few months now. As you sat down on the couch, you let out a content sigh. It'd been a long time since you'd gotten to have so much "me-time", and if you were being honest, you were enjoying it. You put your cup of coffee down on the end table, leaning back into the plush fabric of the couch.
"Why are you up so early?"
You looked to him as he slowly staggered over to you. He plopped down on the couch, lying on his stomach with his arms snaking around your waist as he laid his head in your lap.
"I wanted some alone time."
He scoffed at that, but his eyes remained closed. You could tell that he'd probably woken up, realized that you were gone and got up just to look for you. "Why would you want any of that?" He asked in a rare-sleepy voice.
"It's called space, J. You have yours and I have my own."
You moved your fingers through his hair and he let out a tired groan. "Yeah, but I prefer your space a lot more anyway."
"I know you do," you smiled softly as he started to fall asleep once again. You watched him for awhile as his breathing slowed. You always wanted to know what a man like him dreamt about, robberies? Murder? Frost? Maybe...you.
You felt your cheeks get red but you pushed your thoughts away as you picked up your book and flipped to the page you'd last read. As you did, there was movement in your lap. The Jokers eyes were open and his blue eyes were staring up at you.
"Are you ignoring me?" He asked in a childish sounding voice.
"Ignoring you? You fell asleep," you didn't hold back your laughter as he continued to stare accusingly up at you.
"So?" He huffed, his eyes were already starting to drift closed. He must of been really tried.
"J? Why don't you go back upstairs and get some more sleep?"
"Im perfectly content here," he sighed.
"If you're gonna keep sleeping, I'm going to read my book."
"And fantasize about other men while you read that smut," his eyes were open once again and he'd taken the book from you.
"Smut?" You laughed. "It's a murder mystery, the only romance in it died with the couple who were murdered together."
"Really?" His blood-shot eyes went a bit wide in curiosity as he turned the book around so he could read the back of it.
"Yes, no smut and no romance," you giggled.
"Hm, this actually sounds pretty good. I'll read it when your done with it," he handed it back to you and you leaned down to give him a quick peck on the forehead.
"Well the only way you'll get to read it then is if you let me read it," you smirked.
"Fine fine, go ahead."
"So sleep now and then we can talk about it later together," you said softly, your fingers smoothing a few strands of his hair out of his face. You'd grown so used to him being around you all the time, you thought that it was space you wanted but if you were being honest with yourself, it wasn't. In this moment, right here, you'd never felt so content.
