I was standing on the balcony that overlooks the courtyard staring at the ring on my left hand. My engagement ring. The words still sounded foreign, I just couldn't believe it.
I heard Elijah approach. "I believe congratulations are in order."
I gave him a small smile. "Yeah. You know, I never thought your brother was the marrying type."
"I guess all he needed was the right woman," Elijah told me.
"Elijah, listen," I turned to face him. "I just want you to know that after everything that's happened between us, I will always want you in my life. That will never change. And I know you're on a mission to eradicate The Hollow, but you've spent your entire existence dedicated to saving this family and making other people happy. Maybe it's time you thought about yourself for a change, seek out your own happiness because after all the good that you've done, you've earned it. You deserve to be happy, Elijah."
Elijah looked at me, taking my words to heart and nodded before walking away.
I went back to my old room and found Hayley waiting for me and she didn't fail to notice the ring on my finger.
"Nice ice," she raised her brows. "So, you and Klaus are engaged, huh? Did not see that coming."
I shook my head as I sat next to her, an amused smile on my lips. I could hear Elijah and Klaus talking elsewhere in the compound and decided to eavesdrop.
Elijah groaned in disgust. "O positive. You heathen."
"New rules," Klaus told his brother. "No bloodshed in the house where my daughter sleeps and plays. Perhaps I'll go out for dinner."
"No, no, no, no," Elijah said. "We have no way to know who will take Dominic's place as The Hollow's right hand, there could be any number of disciples out there."
"Yes, yes, yes," Klaus replied. "All who may have the means to kill us. You know, if you hadn't been so hasty to kill him, we'd be dealing with the devil we know."
"Spoken by the devil I know best of all," Elijah told him.
"I take it you have a plan?" Klaus asked.
"Freya will place a barrier spell on the compound," Elijah answered. "No one gets in or out."
Klaus didn't like this plan at all. "Oh, so we're to stay here while our enemies seek to resurrect this monstrosity and let me guess, you won't be confined here."
"I have a little errand to run," Elijah told him.
"And while you're off cavorting all over town, I'm what? Grounded?" Klaus asked.
"Essentially," Elijah answered. "Why don't you take out your frustration on that filthy jaw bone our enemy seems so fascinated by."
