Chapter 7
Loss

I heard a knock on the front door from downstairs. I got up off my bed and walked down the stairs, wondering who was at the door at 9:30 pm. I knew it wasn't my dad. He hasn't been home in 3 days. When I got to the front door, I looked through the peephole and my heart jumped in my chest. I opened the door.
"Hey" I said. "I forgot you were coming over today. We should be safe. My dad hasn't been home in 3 days."
"Great." He replied. "Can I come in?" I stepped back from the door and held my arm in the air, motioning for him to come in.
"Well, this is my place" I said nervously. The place was a mess because my dad barely ever cleans up. He makes me do it. I rolled my eyes at the thought.
"I'm sorry for the mess" I paused for a moment, leaving awkward silence hanging in the air. "Follow me" I motioned for him to come upstairs with me. My room is probably a much better place to bring someone to.
When we stepped in the doorway, Blaze's eyes lit up. All over my room were music related things. My walls are lined with band posters like Asking Alexandria, black veil brides, bring me the horizon and many more. There are microphone statues on my desk and nightstand.
"Do you sing?" Blaze asked. I felt my face grow hot and quickly turned my face away from him.
"Umm. A l-little." I stuttered. "When my mom was still alive and I lived with her and my dad, I competed in a few 1st and 2nd grade talent shows.
"That's pretty cool. I'm sorry about the loss of your mom. I know how it feels to lose a parent. I lost my dad 3 years ago. Car crash. That's why I moved here a week ago. My mom now has a drinking and drug use problem since he died. We lost our house back in New York so we had to move here, to Pennsylvania." Blaze said. I could see the tears sticking to his eyes and we sat on the edge of my bed. I put my hand on his and looked in his eyes. A tear slowly rolled down his soft, pale cheeks.
"I'm so sorry, Blaze." I slowly held my arms out and he hugged me. Suddenly, it was like an electric surge pulsing through my body. He backed away calming himself down by talking to me.
"So.. What about you? What happened to your mom?" He asked, wiping his sleeve across his face one last time. I looked down at my hands laying in my lap. "You don't have to if you're not comfortable with talking about it". I didn't answer right away. I was still processing what he asked; what so many people have asked.
"Kayla, are you-"
"It was when I was in 3rd grade" I paused for a minute, trying to keep my composure. " The school got a call from the hospital that my mom was in a plane crash coming back from her yearly trip to the Bahamas. I was pulled out of school and picked up by my grandma. She drove me to the hospital in complete silence. When we got there, I ran inside, followed by my grandma and found my mom. I yanked the curtain back and looked at her In horror." I paused again. "She was barely recognizable. She had cuts and bruises all over her face. Two hours later, she passed away because her lungs filled with blood. She died right after she told me she loved me... I never got the chance to say it back. "
"Wow. I'm so sorry" he said, now holding my hand.
"Yea. It's in the past but it still haunts me. I'm getting pretty tired. I think I'm going to go to sleep. You're welcome to stay here. "
"Thanks, Kayla. I don't think my mom will realize anyways. I'll text her in the morning." He laid back with his arms above his head. I layed next to him and layed my head on his chest. We fell asleep almost instantly, both comforting each other. It was nice.
