I tried to make this chapter real meaningful so we'll see how it goes. Warning! Things do get a little steamy towards the end 😏
Katniss P.O.V.
My hands shake as Peeta and I sit on the floor by the fireplace. As we wait for the freshly toasted bread to cool, Peeta reaches over and takes my hand in his. I look over at him and give him a nervous smile.
"I love you," Peeta says softly, but he keeps talking before I can reply. "But I don't just love you. I'm in love with you, Katniss. And I will be until my dying breath. I promise I'll do whatever it takes to take care of you. From here on out, you'll never be alone. We'll figure everything out together."
I nod my head. "And I'm also in love with you," I tell him truthfully. "I might not be the best wife, but I promise I'll try." Peeta chuckles and I take a deep breath. "And you'll never be alone, either."
Peeta doesn't let go of my hand as he reaches his free hand over to pinch off a piece of the bread. He hands it to me, and my stomach fills with nerves. Peeta and I lift the bread to each other's lips, and we look at each other.
"Always," Peeta says softly.
I smile at him and nod my head. "Always." We feed each other the bread, and I instantly feel better.
I am Peeta's. He is mine. And nothing will ever change that.
Peeta leans over and kisses me. We pull back from each other and smile.
"I love you," Peeta tells me softly.
"I love you too," I reply. Peeta stands up off the floor and pulls me with him.
"Come here," Peeta says as he leads me over to the couch. We sit down side by side and watch as the flames dance around in the fireplace.
"I just came over here to find comfort from a nightmare," I say as I rest my head over on his shoulder. "I didn't know that we were going to get married." Peeta laughs and kisses the top of my head. It's not long until I start feeling tired. Peeta can see that I'm about to fall asleep, so he picks me up and carries me bridal style to the bedroom. He lays me down on his bed…
And that's when it hits me. This is now our bed. I smile at the thought.
"Goodnight, Katniss," Peeta says quietly. "I love you."
"I love you too," I reply.
Peeta leans over and kisses me, but when he pulls back, he just looks at me. He kisses me again, but very slowly this time. I wrap my arms around his neck, and feel desire course through my veins.
My previous tiredness is now replaced with that hunger. A hunger for Peeta. And it is now stronger than ever.
Peeta's hands rub my arms as he kisses me. We stay like that for a while. I know we both want this, but we're both nervous too.
Peeta's hands start to curiously wander, settling on the skin beneath the hem of my shirt. My heart starts racing.
"Sorry," Peeta says breathlessly. "I don't exactly know what I'm doing." I let out a nervous laugh.
"It's okay," I say softly. "Go slow. We'll learn together." Peeta nods, and his lips move to my neck. Peeta slowly lifts my shirt, but he pulls back to look at me. I nod my head, and my shirt soon hits the floor.
My arms instinctively come up to cover my bare skin, but Peeta quickly stops me.
"Don't," he breathes. "You are so beautiful." I feel the heat rise to my cheeks and Peeta smirks.
"I made you blush," he muses. I smile a little and wrap my arms back around his neck. My hands start shaking again as I begin to remove Peeta's shirt. He notices and gives me a concerned look.
"If you're nervous, we don't have to…"
I stop him by shaking my head. "I'm okay," I say. "I want this." Peeta nods and goes back to slowly kissing me.
It's not long until there are no clothes creating a barrier between us.
"You're sure?" Peeta asks quietly in my ear. I nod my head.
"Only if you are," I tell him.
Peeta moves slowly, and I let out a small, painful gasp.
"I'm sorry," Peeta says as he places quick kisses on my neck. "I'm sorry." He stays still, waiting for me to tell him that I'm okay. Peeta's being as patient as ever, but I can tell by his heavy breathing that he won't be able to stay still much longer.
I move my hips a little; trying to get used to the feeling; and Peeta's breath hitches. Soon, the pain starts to fade away.
"Slowly," I say in his ear. Peeta nods and the pain quickly turns to pleasure. I let out a moan, and Peeta's lips find mine. Our heavy breaths mix together. I tangle my fingers in Peeta's hair, and he lets his hands travel over my body.
I wrap my legs around his back and somehow pull him closer to me. My mind feels like it's a million miles away. I'm not worried about anything at the moment. It seems like everything is perfect, and nothing else exists other than me and Peeta. I couldn't think about anything else if I wanted to.
All too soon, we both gasp in pleasure, and Peeta lays down beside of me. He pulls me closer to him and wraps me up in his arms as we both try to catch our breaths.
"I love you so much," Peeta pants as he gives me a quick kiss.
"I love you too," I say breathlessly.
"Did I hurt you?"
"No," I say as I shake my head. "I'm okay now." Peeta nods and kisses my forehead. He wraps an arm protectively around me before we both slowly drift off to sleep.
