"Please, Vivienne, rescite you're vows." The priest said.
Vows? No one told her there will be vows. Oh well. Doesn't make a difference.
"I vow," she pushed. "To marry you."
There was a silence in which people expected her to continue. "That's about it," she shrugged.
The priest cleared his throat and looked at Keith. "Well, would you please, Keith, rescite yours."
Keith smiled and took out a paper. "Honey," he started. "Thank you for accepting my propsal. My father always said that work is the most important thing, it always came first. He also said I needed a strong woman. One that won't distract me and would help me focus on my work. And I can see that in you.." Viv blocked his voice out at once. GOD! It would have been better if he just shut up! Was he stupid? What kind of broom tells his bride that she came after his work!
She looked around and spotted Charles. He was shaking his head madly at her. She raised a brow and he stood up at once. Every head in the room turning to him.
Keith came to a hault as he looked from Viv to Charles.
"What's going on?" he asked Charles.
"um....where's the bathroom?" Charles.
When no one answered he sat again. Trying not to die of embarrassment. It's okay. Eric and Dean would be here any minute now.
But they didn't come. Keith finished his vows and the priest said, "At this time, I ask you both, Keith and Vivienne to to face each other & take each other’s hands. Vivienne, will you take Keith to be your husband, your partner in life and your one true love? Will you cherish his friendship and love him today, tomorrow and forever? Will you trust and honor him, laugh with him and cry with him? Will you be faithful through good times and bad, in sickness and in health as long as you both shall live?"
How could she answer I will without being a liar?
She closed her eyes and tried not to cry. Wouldn't it be nice if she just died now...not have to deal with this? If Eric would just listen to her!
"Don't!" She thought she heard Eric shout.
Filled with hope, her eyes shot open as she turned towards the sound. But it was Charles. He was standing there...looking like he'd die from embarrassment.
Mustering courage he said, "Don't marry him! You don't love him and you know it. Eric loves you. But even if he doesn't..why are you giving yourself to someone you'll never love? You're young. You're young and you're beautiful and you're..free. No matter what people tell you..you are free. Go ahead..love someone! Enjoy your life! Be young! Eric should be here any moment. But even if he never comes through this door you shouldn't marry Keith. Haven't you seen how..precise love can feel? That feeling you shared with Eric..it's real. But it needs you to fight for it. You need to give it all for love. Do you want to marry him..and be safe. Or do you want to give it all and be real?" He took a deep breath.
Viv smiled through her tears and nodded her head. Yes. She is free. She can choose.
"I'll be real," She whispered.
Smiling apologistically at Keith, she gave him the ring and went down the stairs.
"WHAT DO YOU THINK YOUR DOING, YOUNG LADY!" Her mum screamed stomping towards Viv.
"I'm getting a life, mother!" Viv walked tried to walk past her mum but her mum caught her wrist, pushed her back wards and slapped her.
"HEY!" Keith shouted. "Let her go. He's right," He smiled sadly at Vivienne.
