The day began well enough.

In the morning, Peter had come to pick Em up. The ride to school had been quiet and beautiful, and accompanied by the radio, it was marvelous. Emma had a ton of homework to complete, and she'd stayed up late to complete a part of it. She was dead tired, but a ride with him was enough to keep her a bit awake for about two minutes. Her eyes drooped like dead flies. All she wanted to do was sleep, but she knew that if she missed another day, she was well on her way to heaven.

Thank goodness half her classes were boring and didn't have many notes or homework. Otherwise, she would have missed something, because she had been literally sleeping in some of them. No amount of coffee could wake her up.

Too bad Kelly Riker did.

End of the day, when Em was busy taking out her respective books from her locker, she closed the door to find the Queen from Hell leaning against the locker next to her.

"Hey, Emma!" She started in that totally fake sweet voice of hers. She was wearing a tight white shirt with the sleeves rolled up and the shortest skirt Emma had ever seen. She could practically see the leopard print thong. Her blond hair was perfectly straight, and her face was caked with makeup. When Em saw her, she always remembered the way Kelly had bullied her. If there was one person that Em hated, it was Kelly.

"Kelly."

"Welcome back! I didn't get a chance to welcome you back properly! How are you?"

"What do you want?" Em asked, her tone cold.

"Ouch! That's not a nice way to talk to someone being so sweet!"

"You and I both know you don't have my best interests at heart. What are you really wasting your time talking to me for?"

"Hmm, ok, I just wanted to tell you... you're not the only one."

"Huh?"

"These past month has been blissful! Really, Peter is a great person to... to hang out with! We had so much fun!" She giggled like mean girls do, and her words froze her heart, and her ears felt like someone was pouring boiling oil into them.

Peter and Kelly? No. No way. He never gave her the time of day when they were small, why would he do so now? She had to be lying, right?

But an insistent voice started speaking in her head. Things could change in one month. Kelly freaking Riker could get her grubby little paws on her boyfriend. They could have done so much that... Em would take a gazillion years to agree. Kelly was fun, beautiful, social and popular. What was Em, compared to her? Maybe Em was cute, but other than that, what? She wasn't fun. She wasn't social. She definitely wasn't popular, and god forbid she ever be described as hot. She liked to take things slowly, weighing the pros and cons, just like she did with her friendship with Peter.

Then a nice voice started telling her, her good qualities. He had waited for two years, single, to be her boyfriend. He'd fought for her and defended her against Christopher. He'd dissed Kelly too many times. And if Peter was into popular people, he would have given Sienna a chance a long time ago, if he wanted to. She remembered the way he'd kissed her in the auditorium. She went back and remembered him rejecting Kelly in third grade and sitting with her, trying to make conversation while she kept quiet like a mouse. He had been her knight in shining armour. He wouldn't cheat on her with someone as horrible as Kelly.

Kelly's face had been plastered with that mean ' I've won you're going down bitch' smile. Maybe Kelly was egging her on, to react and break up with Peter. Closing her locker, she simply smirked, and Kelly's smile faltered.

"Wow, Kelly, if there was a Perfect Bitch award, I would give it to you. Seriously? You've got to try better than that to make me feel insecure, Riker. Good bye. Do use some grey cells while you think how to make me miserable."

Kelly's mouth dropped, and Em turned and walked away, where she met a waiting Peter. He smiled when he saw her. Kissing her forehead (which was very sweet), he gave her an apologetic smile.

"I'm sorry, babe. After school soccer practices starting from today, so... well, I won't be able to, like, drop you and stuff, and I'm so sorry-"

"Hey, it's ok. Have fun, and don't get too hurt, ok?" She smiled. His face showed relief, and for a brief second, Kelly's words sounded in her head. What if this was an excuse to hang out with Kelly? Then she saw Luke yell out to him, and she quickly removed that thought from her mind. God, how could she even think that? What was wrong with her?

As she walked back home, trying to squelch these horrible thoughts, she thought one thing was clear: she may have dissed Kelly at not making a good enough attempt, but she had, oh, she had. She had been very successful at planting the seed of insecurity in Em's mind.
