I open my eyes, and Abel is sitting next to me, our palms touching. His hand feels warm, almost dreamlike as he tangles his fingers into mine, and lets his arm drop. It's like my heart is thawing from being eternally ice-cold. It's a strange thing, and my brain starts thinking one hundred kilometers an hour, never stopping. My arm drops down with him and we're sitting in a bathroom, holding hands.
His eyes move up, interlocking into mine. He closes his eyes and moves his face closer to mine. I flinch at first, but then I stare at the wall as he whispers into my ear. "This is almost like a metaphor. We were always blocked by that glass, but now we can truly be together." He moves away, and his face looks like it's been dusted with a red tint. I realize I'm staring, so I look to the side.
He slowly let's go, and I stand, him following suit. We both stare at each other, and once again my heart is taken with a feeling of longing. I turn my head, walking out of the small room, heading to the common area. I turn abruptly, and Abel is there. He steps closer, closing the space between us as he wraps me up in a warm embrace. I wrap my arms around his back, burying my face into his chest. "I'll always be there for you," he whispers into my ear. "You are the most amazing person I've ever met."
At this time, I realize my heart is going crazy, my brain rushing my thoughts. I focus, trying to find the revelation I can feel. Suddenly, it comes into view. Love, I think.
"Phoenix," My mother said. "Love is when you're with someone and you feel strong like you can do anything... Like you're walking on clouds. Your heart races, and you want to be with them all the time. Love... once you fall you can't go back."
We break from the spell that seemed to tangle us together like vines, and Abel looks to me, grinning in a way I've never seen before. He moves closer, his arms still wrapped around my waist. "I think I love you, Phoenix Aega." He says, giving me the most meaningful look as I stare right into his eyes.
"Me too." I whisper.
He pulls me into a tender kiss as we stand in the living room, but all seems to melt away like snow into a puddle, just like my heart.
