Chapter 2
The irritating noise woke Eliza from her peaceful slumber. She pulled her arm out from beneath her pillow with her eyes closed trying to locate the dreaded sound. Her outstretched hand found its way to the alarm clock. She popped one eye open. And then another. The sunlight set fire to her eyes.
“I hate mornings,” Eliza muttered under her breath.
She got up into a seated position stretching her arms out as far as they went while yawning at the same time. She stood up from her queen bed resting her bare feet on her dark hardwood floors. She walked over to her outfit she picked the night before knowing she would wake up later than planned. She grabbed the outfit before heading into the bathroom to get ready for the day that waited ahead.
“Breakfast”, bellowed her mom.
“Just a second.” Eliza replied.
Soon after Eliza bounced into the kitchen, ready to start her day exploring. She had taken the time to make a list of all of the sights she wanted to see, the stores she wanted to shop in and the restaurants where she wanted to eat. She had her “Welcome to Paris” checklist and was ready to tick off each and every item on it.
“Morning Mom!” Eliza announced, extending her arm and reaching for the cabinet above her head, grabbing a bowl and, her personal favourite, Lucky Charms. “Where’s Ben?”
“Well, sweetie he’s still in bed”, Eliza’s mother couldn't get another word in before Eliza started to chatter away .
“What? Why?” She questioned walking over to the fridge to grab the milk. “I have the whole day planned, we were going to go to Notre Dame first then hit the Eiffel Tower and we can’t forget to go shopping, right?”
Taking a seat across from her mom mixing the milk in with her cereal, a quizzical expression was making its way onto her face.
“I’m afraid not Eliza, it’s raining cats and dogs outside. We will get drenched if you even step a foot outside.”
Eliza excused herself, not believing what her mother’s story. The chair made a squeaking sound that made her mother cringe as she made her way to the window to be faced with the down pour of rain.
Eliza was angry, not at her mother but at the weather, if that was possible.
Eliza returned to her seat huffing and puffing. She was trying to figure out how to lay the blame on someone, other then mother nature.
“Sweetie, I know your are upset but we’ll be here for longer than you think, we have plenty of time to go sight seeing!” Eliza’s mother, Lily, tried to lighten up the situation but it just made Eliza more angry.
“Why don’t you take a little walk? It would help if you could take the empty moving boxes to the trash room, it is only two floors down,” noted her mom.
Eliza said nothing, not a word.
She made her way out of the apartment, a frown etched into her face and recycling in hand, before her mother could ask her again.
Eliza kept on walking until the elevator door was facing her. She pressed the button ‘down’ and the doors smoothly opened to reveal a boy with a trash bin.
