Chapter 8

It was 9:00 am when Eliza snuck out to take a run. She was clad in her Lululemon

ankle pants, a regular white baggy t-shirt and running in her neon green and hot pink Nike shoes. Eliza didn’t want to get lost so she tracked where she wanted to run and back to the apartment. She started her slow jog, almost tripping at least three times. It was thirteen minutes for her to reach her destination. Instead of listening to music Eliza listened to peoples conversations as she ran by.

She would hear things like, “ce qui est aujourd'hui une belle journée!” Which means “What a beautiful day today!” or some tourists asking locals, “where’s the best French restaurant?”

Before heading home Eliza thought it would be okay to take a breather and stopped inside a French cafe called, “La Caféothèque.”

Her heart was beating against her chest when she strolled in and took a walk to the counter to find the cash register person facing the other way.

“Excuse me?”

“Yes, sorry, how can I help you?” Luc’s words faded when he found that the girl staring back at him was the same girl who left him with no hope of being with her.

“Luc?” The word slipped out of her mouth. It felt like forever since they had seen each other.

“We need to talk. Why are you ignoring me?” Eliza was straight to the point.

“I think you know why.” Luc shot back, sounding irritated.

Eliza grinded her teeth.

“Actually I don’t. Care to fill me in?”

“Prenez mon quart de travail pendant une minute.” Luc’s french was perfect as he turned to a coworker telling them to take his shift, handing them his apron.

“Follow me,” Luc said, taking Eliza's hand in his. Eliza smiled to herslef as she followed him through the empty cafe to the back door. He opened it letting her walk through before him. It was an old alleyway with a few boxes by the door.

“Are you mad at me because of what you read?” Eliza put her head down avoiding Luc’s searching eyes.

“Yeah, I am.” Luc confessed. “I’m mad because you didn't tell me and I’m also mad because I knew I was going to end up like one of those guys if I told you how I felt.”

“What?” Eliza lifted her head, facing Luc. “You wouldn't end up like any of those guys.” she argued.

“How do you know that El?” Luc challenged her.

“I don’t,” she admitted. “So, you work here now?” Eliza tried to make small talk.

“Yeah, a week ago.” Luc nodded.

Eliza looked around the small alleyway, anywhere other than looking at Luc.

“Look, Eliza. I really like you. A lot. Maybe even more than that but after I left the apartment that day I was angry and I don’t think I had the right to ignore you like that. And I’m so sorry.”

“I’m sorry too and I think I may even like you more than a lot too.” Eliza revealed.

“So, does this mean were okay?” Eliza questioned.

“We’re better than okay.” Luc gleamed, cupping Eliza’s cheeks with his hands and kissing her on the lips. Eliza would have preferred a more romantic setting, but based on his kiss, it was perfect.
